If you are reading this Jerry, this may be the Cornish one I was telling you about. In which case it’s sort of a red herring! Robert

Fine antipodean example! Robert
Here’s a nice picture taken in the south of France by John Heath in 1975. He was driving the Beresford’s 5MW, PVT 130M. The Scania is YVT 759M and the Atki is GRE 877N (Volvo not identified). John was waiting to load apples back to UK. Ashley Coghill kindly passed this my way. Robert
A better, clearer pic of this one in Cornwall. Robert

A new pic of the preserved A-series with 5MW cab gleaned from cyberspace. I’d certainly enjoy driving this one. Robert
Another great looking hard working Kiwi MW.
Hi.
Seeing all the pics. of the ERF’s with the 5mw cab makes me wonder what they were like for the driver.
Were they better in respect of driver comfort, ie space, vision, sound levels , comfortable seat.
I have only seen them from the outside and never driven one but they look as if , in their day, they were a good truck, BUT was they??

Several people on these threads have said that they were lovely to drive, especially the European-spec ones with bigger engines and LHD. Robert

Hmmm… on the thread detailing their introduction into the Belgian (Dutch?) market, there was some mention of things having to be sorted out regarding driver acceptance, IIRC. You will know better than me, I’m sure.

As with all new lorries, there will have been mixed responses to the 5MW, especially over the Channel where the ERF would have seemed quite ‘foreign’ (and was, of course). UK drivers I’ve spoken to loved them (Jerry Cooke, for one).
As for the driver acceptance issue in Benelux, I’ve scoured the LHD ERF 5MW thread and can find no reference to this. However, there is a scan of a 3-page article called ‘ERF has a bridgehead in Europe’ which someone posted which may make reference to this, but I can’t read it as the scan is fuzzy. Perhaps the reference is in there… Robert

Even though mine was only a 220 and was pretty worn out when I got it, she was a really nice motor to drive

That was one of the articles. The resolution is indeed poor, although the copies on my hard drive are much clearer. It is as if the person who posted the originals has replaced them with unreadable copies. Never mind- here are the originals:
archive.commercialmotor.com/arti … -in-europeIt does state that the first lot of ERFs in Belgium were found lacking in the cab. I thought I remembered some discussion of that on here. I’m not going looking for it- there’s loads of stuff been posted since

Thanks for that link, I’ve often wondered what the contents of that piece were! Basically, it gives the 5MW a very good press, as did the Belgian trade magazine according to another article I posted on the LHD thread. I’ve got a vague notion of having read on one of these threads that Delcon had trouble with ERF back-up, rather than the units being essentially flawed… Robert
