Skippy70. For heavy recovery, lift and tow, a C+E is required in England BUT in Scotland you can lift and tow a 44 ton artic with a C licence, UNLESS they have changed the rules recently.
Yeah 1997. The rules are the same UK wide.

Thanks fellas for the replys…maybe not a good idea , it was passed to me to think about, ive thought about it , as said earlier it was a bit of boredom setting in…and not agency work, i wont be renewing my entitlement or doing the dcpc, so many thanks to all that gave advice and replied. Shytalk.
Just another ‘negative’ Shytalk… to do the repo. work you would also need DCPC to drive anything between 3.5t & 7.5t (at least after Sept 2014) to keep your C1 category on your licence valid for Hire & Reward work i.e. PAID DRIVING. I know of a big name insurance company who’ve put their drivers through DCPC - they do courtesy car deliveries/swaps & mainly on a 3.5t beavertail but occasionally they’ll use 7.5tonner - this is where they need DCPC & Tacho.
Tell you what…have you thought about Asda/Tesco/Sainsbury/Ocado home deliveries - you know in the 3.5t fridge/box vans -apparently it’s a decent part-timer role. No long distance■■?
I know people who work on the supermarket vans.
It’s not easy (especially in Wales where you can’t use carrier bags but have to carry everything in plastic crates, then unload the crate on the doorstep).
The timings are tough, and particularly when it’s dark it can be difficult to identify the house you are supposed to deliver to…the sat nav/postcode system will only get you to within half a mile of the average private house.
You need good people skills too, because the people can be difficult and you have to be the smiling face of the company.
It’s a bit like furniture removals, only multidrop with lighter weights!
About the only truck driving work you can do without DCPC (or another trade that you use the vehicle for) is vehicle collection/delivery for a hire company or dealer.
Any driving which you get paid for is going to be classed as commercial and you will need the DCPC. And yes, it will be enforced.
Don’t think of all Taxi work in the same way.
If you live near a major airport it will have at least one specialist private hire Co’ who only ferry Pilots to & from the job. Often in big Merc’s or BMW’s, the drivers are rarely recruited from the general Taxi ranks.
We need a new thread to gather all the possibilities open to semi-retired ex-LGV drivers.
