Red light at night

A mate of mine used to roll into Gateshead market with his red light glaring from behind the bunk of his old Seddon Atk, and when I asked him one night why he had it on, he replied it was because none of his dash lights worked, and it was the only way he could see how fast he was going

As for wearing specs, I have done a lot of night trunking, and a pair of reacolight sunglasses seem to help me.

Specs at night? - just make sure they’re clean - a grubby pair makes for horrible glare at night.

I found by accident that glasses with a green tint work for me especially at night. I find the worst light for driving is just the 10 minutes or so before sunrise.

the only thing the red lights did for me was to get propositioned in a layby…it may have a significant meaning in certain circles :open_mouth:

Which lay-by exactly and where■■?.. Just want to know for research reasons you understand    ( PS only if the interest shown was female )

On the A614 at ollerton, think its pretty common round there, and it has to be said she was pretty tasty

You get dive bombed by a choice in the layby’s heading in to Wolverhampton from the M6/M54. Not the best when you’re trying to get an early night though, bang, bang, bang, nearly gave me a heart attack.

Banging ALL night? You,re just boasting now

The red lights in Scanias are completely useless. I prefer them on at night if they’re any good.

Agreed! Waste of time having them on!

The lights i had in an 05 actros were green and very effective. But then all the interior lights in the actros were good.

My old Actros had to 2 trailer marker light’s in the cab (with red lenses fitted, old bulb style), one above each seat. Gave enough light out to be of use for the hunting down ciggies, misplaced sausage roll etc etc. Used 'em all the time and finished in the morning feeling fresh, ambient light keeping my eyes from feeling sleepy and wanting to close! Now i’m in a Scanny (with just the ultra bright dash which i obviously turn 2 or 3 stops from minimum) and no other lighting (dont like the things on ‘bendy bars’ as i don’t like using white lights due to reflections), i always feel the need for a power nap around 3/3:30am. AFAIK the Scania LED back wall light is angled down so no reflection on the screen. As for falling asleep, this guy has no chance…htf could u put up with this all night…his eyesight gotta be shot to bits…wot a tool

It works ok in my Daf, it just gives a nice light to see where stuff is at night without turning main interior

lights on.

LMAO, hope he’s not on our roads! That would do my head in. Best thing is that he thinks he is really cool but he’s not, he’s a …

For those of you who don’t know the origin or “red lights”…

When the light starts to fade, your eyes have to adjust to the lack of available light to enable you to still be able to see in the dark (I won’t go into the purpose of cones and rods in your eyes)…funnily enough this is called “night vision” and human eyes aren’t too bad at it once they’ve had time to adjust to it. However…if its almost pitch black and you’ve not seen any large amounts of light for some time, and therefore have acquired your night vision, it can be ruined in an instant by a sudden input of light…such as a torch or cab lights. Hence why you’re often dazzled by high beams, and after the car has passed, you will usually see a green/purple splodge in the middle of your vision…after a while, it goes back to normal.

The whole purpose of red lights being used is because they have a different ‘frequency’ to white light in the electromagnetic/light spectrum, and if you have acquired your night vision, red light will not ruin your night vision. This is especially useful when reading a map for instance…not only that but it has another use. Red light doesn’t travel as far as white light.

So if you were s soldier trekking through the woods or through fields in the pitch black after having acquired your night vision…you would turn on a red light to read a map, after you turn the red light off, you wouldn’t have lost your night vision AND a potential enemy wouldn’t be able to see you as easily.

The whole point of red lights in trucks is so that you or your drivers mate can turn the lights on to read a map to help you navigate, and it won’t affect your night vision whilst the light is on or after you turn it off.

exactly the same reasoning is used on a ship, the lookout is staring out to the horizon and back to the ship looking for obstacles of danger, a bright light from the binnacle or the chart room would kill his vision so red is used instead, also the navigator can come out to check the compass heading and still see the steps :stuck_out_tongue:

You are right there Mr Wheel Nut…

The Russian, Ukranian, Estonian or Polish officer of the watch who was on before you has left an MT vodka bottle rolling around the wheelhouse floor.

See now, I was never convinced by this one until I tried it one day and found my eyes a whole lot less strained and tired as a result. Again, not completely convinced, I ran without them one night a couple of weeks later and the opposite effect occured. I can only think that it works for me because headlights etc. outside seem less bright in contrast to the cab interior. And yes, it also makes it easier to find your ■■■■. :stuck_out_tongue:

I’m with Wheelnut,Raymundo & Lucy on this one,1st had them as standard fitting on a 3 series early 90’s, tried them & have used them ever since. Also cranking the panel lights back a couple of notches or so is far easier on the eyes over a long drive in the dark imho.

always have the red light on at night, I dont like the cab being pitch black

i saw one of these red lights on a scania on my way to work last night didnt seem bright i always thought u werent allowed lights on in a cab anyway got told off for having light on in car before

440Mopar:
is a load of shhhh, Think i heard or read somewhere that driving with a red backlight in the cab in the dark reduces fatigue and stops the dazzle from oncoming vehicles. The FH has a red light setting so i tried it. Result, nothing, does it work for others or is it another myth,or is it me  .

Another member of the Rob K class- I have never tried it so I don’t understand it, I don’t do it so anyone who does do it is stupid.

I wear yellow specs at night and it seems to help, just takes a bit of getting used to with traffic lights.
