re camion stew

Hi Steve

This is John Shaw Mackie who had an artificial leg and worked for Frank White going to the middle east and then to russia and it never seemed to hinder his work

Hi - Jamie when was that pic of Billy Thomas & Les Naylor taken? I last saw Billy a couple of years ago, he was pulling a tipping trailer for that firm in Dover (Icant remember the name) before they sold up. I heard he was doing something else now but I can’t remember what. Has he been ill? I’m not sure. He used to drive for Hick’s doing M/E must have been back in the 70’s, ever since I can remember he has run his own truck, he used to have a tidy red F10 that he fitted a mid-lift to, & when he was on the tippers he had a white Merc.
I last saw Les about 12/14 years ago when he was driving for Crabtree(?) on DT’s then he gave up driving to be a plant operator.
Mick Ekersley I am sure used to come from Sheffield I think he did once have a red F89 he certainly had a red F10 which he sold and then he had a Leyland Roadtrain that he did some Italy’s with again the last time I saw him was about 12/14 years ago.
All three of them are lovely blokes and great to run with.
Gavin
PS tipping firm was Mike Beer.

Hi Gavin, the photo of billy and les was taken when we were running to uzbekistan, to the gold mine at zarafshan which was around 96/97. here is a photo of Billy’s F12 which is the one you may be thinking was an F10, this photo was taken in the Ural mountain’s in russia on the 17th of september’ when we had to park up because of a heavy snow storm.

Billy may have subbed for Hicks at one time but i dont think he was ever employed there. you are right about mike beer and he was still there at the tail end of last year. He still has the hill farm at Brynmawr and last i spoke he was driving an FH12.
You are spot on about Mick Eckersley in everything you wrote. Last time i spoke to him was at the M/E reunion a couple of years ago. here is one of Mick holding up the bar with Dave Charlson and Tony Meddins.

I have not seen or heard of Les Naylor for a number of years but as you say another great guy. regards Jamie.

A Scot lost in the Valley’s.

Hi Jamie
I hope you are well. I just got home from a pool bbq, and as you can imagine, it was hell !!! Laods of grilled fish, fillet steak and extra Old rum. Erghhhhh!
Anyway, I came across this last post and to be honest I got a sad feeling.
I havnt seen them old boys for so long, and it made me miss the old days.
Meddins with his roll ups ! Mick with his humor and tales, it all seems so long ago…well it is, aint it.20yrs plus.
But that is " Nostalgia" and I’m so glad that I found this website.
I lost touch with everyone when I came off the road.
Regards
GS

It’s a good job this thread is about camion cuisine as I appear to have a bit of egg on my face   .
Jamie, I obviously got mixed up with Mike Benn from Lancashire and Mick Eckersley from Yorkshire but I am now certain that it was Mike Benn who had the red Volvo F89, in fact I have just been through the photo shoebox and this is the truck that I was thinking of.
Ian, as you quite rightly said Billy Hamm from Bolton had only one leg and not Billy Thomas from South Wales, who I thought did some work for Hicks’s in the early 80’s.
Regards Steve.

Thank you Jamie, that is the “■■■■” I knew, all them years ago, I guessed he may have passed on, because he was a good age when I knew in 1975, this site is great to find things out, now I can say I have met three great guys and legends in Stan “w”, ■■■■ " Snowy" and ■■■■ from Bartons. Also it has been a honour to recieve replies from all you knights of the road. Sandman Norman
