I plead guilty to being a R4 fan, but am emphatically not an Archers Addict. I gave up on that years ago.
Eddie Mair (? Apologies if misspelled) on PM Programme- John Humphries, Sarah Montague, et al, on Today, are all good provocative interviewers. Current affairs, science, comedy is all there. Clearly not every programme is to everyone’s taste, but on the whole it’s my station of choice.
Bias? Every current affairs and news programme must be edited, so there must be a human element in deciding what to include or leave out; how much time to give to conflicting arguments?
The BBC is, a bit more than other non publicly owned news media outlets, accountable to the public. At least the Beeb has FeedBack, the Murdoch press has . . . ?
The BBC did a lot of self analysis after the MMR, Andrew Wakefield debacle, but some editors and producers haven’t learnt the lessons.
Not all points of view are equal.
Not all speakers should be given equal weight.
If you wanna know about truck driving you ask who?
OK, ask everyone, but give more time to someone who has driven a truck. Give the opinion of others but maybe less time.
Climate change for example?
Report all points of view. Yes. But if 99% of climatologists say it’s real, and if an ex Chancellor of the Exchequer and just one President of the USA says it’s fake? Well, I reckon, I know who should get most air time.
The Beeb puts out some programming that doesn’t appeal to me at all, but for me R4 alone is worth the licence fee money.
Dont get me started on Terry from the allotment in Wales with " Going live now to Terry , with sound effects of a carrot being pulled out of the ground ." !!,!
This garbage is on the Jeremy Vine show, and he is on £750,000 a year.
Whenever there is a debate involving lorries, the caller sticking up for transport is a very angry man from up North, who sounds narrow minded.
The anti lorry caller is always a middle class woman who knows nothing and campaigns to ban the menace of lorries.
But she likes her parcel van delivery, but never thought that her parcel once was in a thundering juggernaut .

Jack FM Oxfordsgire is the best of a bad bunch, can’t stand that t… on the breakfast show. When I do listen I do like some of the women they speak to.

I’m with you Franglais regarding Radio 4.
It’s entertaing and educational and informing.
BBC Manchester is also excellent.
However, if I want music then I switch to planet rock or gold(if there is a dab signal available). Can listen via tune in if I have to.
I’m with Franglais too, he put into words what I was too tired to bother. All spot on. 7 million people listen to Today for instance, over 10% of the population, everyone can get something from Radio 4. I doubt there’s a comparable station quality wise on the planet.
Radio 4 is worth listening to, the current affairs coverage goes into more depth than the sound bite you’d get on other stations and there is some debate on issues, which really doesn’t happen elsewhere. They also do some good general interest programs about science or history. Radio 2, is really there as background noise, but I listen to one or 2 things with interest and especially after 7pm they will play music that you’d struggle to find on commercial radio.
However I like others feel the BBC has various agendas it tries to push and tries to get it into all sorts of random programming, but even so I’d take paying the licence fee over the alternative of only having fully commercial broadcasters, who might also push the political agenda of their owners and advertisers.
Franglais:
Juddian: try a listen to BBC R4, PM programme about 17-30 today. That’s dealing with the issue you’re talking about.

What? discussing the issue of the BBC’s unbelievably biased propaganda , some self flagellation live on air with cat’s o’ nine tails whilst reciting the Latin Mass backwards
Seriously mate if i dared put that on then i can almost guarantee my Mrs would brick another bloody listening device/screen, she’s got a sight shorter fuse than i have for such rot
So does that mean you have a “Safe Space” where you can avoid listening to stuff that “Triggers” you?

For music 6 Music is fantastic. I’ve long thought if they were equal and on FM like Radio 2 that it would probably quite rapidly catch Radio 2 and maybe even pass it one day
Don’t mind news on R4 but can’t be done with the Archers, plays etc. Why do they insist on telling you who produced, wrote and made the tea after every feature though?
I don’t know if this is still true but, you got paid less if your were credited with work but being credited meant good advertising for the person involved ( this information is from the 70’s - a friend of mines dad was a tv producer)
I made an official complaint to the BBC about the Steve Wright show.
He sings, whistles, hums and talks over every song, ruining it.
Their reply was this format was popular with the audience, so not changing it .
His guests come on to flog a tour, book, product or anything that is advertising on the BBC which is not allowed.
Their reply was, the guests would not come on the show if couldn’t do a plug.
Another complaint I made, on a different subject was how annoying that their tv presenters wave their arms and hands around like a drunk octopus trying to undo a bra strap.
Their reply was due to timing, with hand waving, and it didn’t warrant a complaint.
Secondly, the Scottish tv weather lady Carole , who insists on using the word " wee", as in there will be a wee amount of rain.
I said that’s urine, use the word small.
I don’t like the stand in DJ’s bringing their ‘brand’ of music with them to the show they are standing in for. Trevor Nelson and his endless list of ‘black artists’ got a bit tiresome I must say. He was crap at pop Master too!!
The late Ray Moore was the best along with Terry, no one will ever match them, Chris Evans hopeless and talks over everyone, Feltz awful Ken Bruce and his mock friendship with sally traffic just awful,Vine is ok sometimes, Wright dreadful and needs moving off, Mayo ok sometimes
I’ve never got this ‘writing in to complain’ stuff.
I mean is it that important? …If you don’t like the programme or even the station, simple don’t listen to it…there is lots of crap on the radio, but I wouldn’t dream of writing in to complain, there are more urgent things in life to bother myself about.
Chris Moyles 6.30 to 10 Radio X, or Nicky Campbell 5 live depending what mood I’m in.
Ken Bruce R2.
Hawksbee and Jacobs Talksport .
Some Steve Wright,.then Simon Mayo.R2.
That just about sums up my listening routine.
On my travels; Planet Rock or Arrow Rock on DAB. Failing that CDs or MP3. Can’t abide BBC or Independant stations, too much talk not enough music.Too many adverts.
BBC local radio is putrid too, endless debate on “important local issues” like Gladys’ bus being axed, the same people texting in, then someone who gave up their career to build mud huts in Africa…
When I was on the flour I refused to tune to Talk Sport. Same discussions carried over, crap crackly reception and awful adverts for builders merchants in football chant styles.
Heart was banned too.
Lastly travel reporters; Why do most put their own take on a problem? Ones on Jack Oxford say crap like “bit busy by McDonalds, lot of hungry burger lovers there…”
