Quirky things at the side of the road past and present

Years ago on the A41 the top side of Shrewsbury on the left going towards Whitchurch there was a pond and someone had made a deckchair out of full size telegraph poles with a giant frog sitting on it with a pair of shorts and sunglasses on it made me laugh every time I saw it. all the best Derrick.

Jelliot:
If you went through the border at Basel in Swiss on the way through the town towards the motorway there was a motorbike sculpture made from rusty scrap out side a bike shop.
Jeff…

ive just looked on Google earth for that, as i remember that before the tunnels were built by-passing it, would be nice to see it again, buti cant see it anywhere, maybe its not there anymore, i reckon it was on Elsasserstrasse? (sorry, cant do umlauts on the computer)

When i used to go to Athens on a regular basis, north of Modena, just before the (A22 where Campogalliano is) on the southbound side, is a big layby/parking area, and there is a massive big red car in there (about 3 times the size of a normal car) it always reminded me of chitty chitty bang bang. I tried putting a link up from Google streetview, i found it ok, but couldnt get the link on here from there. If you went down that way regular, you couldnt miss it!

As you head east on the A47 near Dereham there is an ostrich/emu in the garden of a bungalow. I remember going to Myhills in Foulsham to look at a truck and there was a camel in the field next door!

I know it’s been mentioned on another thread, but I reckon it’s worth reminding ourselves of the glass fibre camel on the Northbound side of the M5 in Somerset?

morgan mclernons parked up ■■

That’s Humphry,and there’s usually a small one alongside.
Also, two klicks south of J24 s/b there is a life size(?) T Rex,used to be looking over the fence, although the last couple of times I’ve been down there, all that can be seen is a pair of feet pointing skyward!

MrJake:
Going west on the A303 beyond Wincanton (I think) on the single lane section there’s a bakers on the LH side that has/had a loaf of bread on a table outside, as it always seemed to be the same loaf I wondered wether it was real but preserved or a well crafted piece of wood or fiberglass. First time I saw it, long time back, I was on a day driving assesment and the trainer bloke told me that any unsold loaves were put out in the afternoon (it was about 4pm) for passing drivers to help themselves, and the sad thing was I believed him, well till I had been by several times and the penny dropped.

That is the best bakery in the south west of England. Lardy cake like you wouldn’t believe

Anybody noticed the life size horse and rider made from horseshoes in the playing field north side of Sanquhar it was put there by the local Riding of The Marches Club. Eddie.

many times Eddie. That also reminded me of those bloody stupid rhinos opposite McDonalds in Dumfries. What’s the crack with that?

Who remembers the Megatron at Alconbury?

Can anyone answer what the large tower with the arch in it is on the M40 between Cherwell Valley and Oxford? I think it looks like a railway coaling stage but it’s always bugged me.

The Lightning jet fighter on the A1 at Balderton near Newark met it’s end a couple of years ago. There was still enough metal left in it to interest the scrapman somehow. Just down the road towards Lincoln Vulcan XM607 is always an impressive sight on the side of the A15 at Waddington.

As a bit of an aircraft buff I always love seeing gate guardians on my travels and also finding them unexpectedly at civvy sites too. Seem to remember a Hunter at Melksham, probably painted red to replicate a speed record holder.

Incidently I saw a bloke playing the bagpipes in a layby on the A14 near Burwell a couple of weeks ago.

ERFMark- RAF Innsworth, nr. Gloucester had a Meteor at it’s main gate for many years.

Greetings, All. At the entrance to the old Fleet Air Arm site at Ford, Littlehampton there is an ex F.A.A Sea Hunter, complete with arrester hook. It is sited up on a pole at an angle, as if banking.
Regards,900x20.

ERFMarc the Vulcan is the one that bombed Stanley airport during the Falklands war. Guess they kept it in case it has to do it again.

I cant remember what the reason was for the Hippo being put up Happy but I do remember it was damaged by the local neds and it was away for a long while getting repaired. I used to think they could have come up with something better than a Hippo to display.
Eddie.

there is a jet,i think a lightning outside BAE systems at salmlesbury nr preston I think A560. :sunglasses:

I like seeing the base gate guardians (I used to work for a certain firm with a base on Wyton Airfield where there’s a Canberra) but the anorak in me always likes discovering them at unusual locations. There’s a great website called Thunder and Lightnings detailing all surviving Cold war Jets and where they can be found. Told you I was an anorak, will be Vulcan spotting at Newark this weekend.

There’s a book called Vulcan 607 about the Black Buck raids which is well worth a red. I guess I’m just addicted to old things that Britain no longer is a world leader in!

Used to love listening to the lone piper at Carter bar, whilst eating ma bacon and square sausage on a tattie scon !

Jocky Elliot… he a had a few tales to tell, mostly about some loose woman tourists. I often gave him a lift to or from the Carter Bar from Jedburgh. Coming back he was usually ■■■■■■■ actually he was usually ■■■■■■ going up there in the morning as well…

Jeff…

There’s a Spitfire outside the front of Northolt airport.
