When I used to drive between Buxton and Macclesfield I used to look forward to seeing a rock formation called The Winking Man, anybody got any photos.
I was driving through Italy one day and I saw a man on a bridge doing something similar.
A mate told me this one, even had the hammer to prove it, well maybe.
Heād stopped out in the middle of nowhere to kick his tyres and have a leak.
Then he noticed a tall slender anthill.
Quite an odd shape for Aussy anthills so he gave it a kick or two and eventually it dissolved down to a sledge hammer head.
The white ants had built a high rise nest over the handle and then consumed the timber.
A good story anyway.
The Winking Man spooky or what?
The Winking Man
is situated in the Peak District National Park on the Edge of Staffordshire Derbyshire Borders. On the A53 Between Leek and Buxton.
I remember in the late 70ās and early 80ās, I saw a few times at Peronne Services, Northbound Side, a pair of Knee lengh White Boots, but they were in a different place every time I saw them. Usually parked below the nearside door, of somebodyās Cab.
When I lived in Market Deeping,if you timed it right, you would see a naked lady walking along High Street, never after 5.45AM which was OK,I did a lot of Scottish highland traffic so liked to leave early!!!

Do you recall the āGentlemen of the Roadā that used to frequent the Highways, I used to see one pushing an old pram between Balsall Common and Stonebridge on the A452 most times that I went that route? Most Peak District driverās will remember the tramp at Baslow, apparently an educated man who just ādropped outā of society.Pete.
Yes I remember him Pete, he had a makeshift hut in the hedgerow just before Stonebridge island on the A452.
The wooden police Range-Rover that was propped up on the M6 northbound around the Preston area about 10/15 years ago. Last time I saw it (or one identical) was in the Leyland Commercial Museum.
Larry, our old friend the late āParkyā reckoned Winnie was the best five bobs worth on the road, he also said she was so clean, she would never spit it out onto your ropes!!! Regards Kev.
Chris Webb ālog bookingā it back home to Sheffield on a dodgy,and itās ā ā ā ā ā ā ā down Anon1.
I was fueling up in Romania one day and across the road I saw 4 clowns having a knock down fight. They were all in full clown gear, clown suits, big hair, big shoes and full clown make up. They must have been going at it for at least a couple of minutes, and it was getting messy. I wasnāt sure if it was for real or was some kind of hidden camera show.

i like these sort of things on french autoroutes.
Not at the side of the road, but quirky all the same! Tāwas either '63 or '64 I was in a 4wheel tanker out by Chipping Norton traveling light & catching up to another wagon. I could see something swaying from side to side on the low trailer, but for the life of me couldnāt register in my brain what it was. I had never experienced this feeling before & found it quite disturbing! Then as I got closer that feeling turned to one of shock & disbelief as I actually saw it was an Elephant standing on an open trailer, facing me & not seeming to have a care in the world! I think he was shackled in some way, but never really took it all in. When I got home & told people what Iād seen, most fell about laughing or suggested I should maybe take some time off work as I may be over doing things!! Only my dad gave the story any credibility & said it was probably something to do with a circus who wintered out that way, but I donāt think the others were convinced!
There was a rest area on the south side near Macon that was full of concrete mushrooms in the mid 90ās.

M56 West bound Passing Frodsham, the Indian Chief"s Head Looses its shape as you pass? was shown this by an old Guy in our Fishing club as a lad, ny on sixty yrs ago, and it has not changed a bit Cheers Chris.
On the A6 north in Holland when passing the A27 entry/exit at Almere I always look out for the 4 huge concrete elephants at the side of the road.
I suppose everyone knows the answer to this one except me so can one of you knowledgable people tell me what the āshed on a poleā is for? Itās on the left-hand side of the A41 Northbound at Christleton, just outside Chester. Iāve looked at the thing at odd times for the last forty-or-so years but, apart from thinking it has something to do with the nearby canal, I still donāt know what it is. Help!

Hi R.O.F.,
I havent seen the
Shed on a polewhich you refer to ,..........but there are similar objects which identify the location of Gas pipes close to the Highways. These have flourescent orange
rooftops. Maybe this is of some help,........or it
s useless twaddle .
Cheers, cattle wagon man.

Iāve always wondered what itās for ?
love to find out.
CWM- compared to the gas markers this thing is HUGE!
At least thirty feet high, with a cylindrical-shaped structure on the top. Itās been there as long as I can remember. Last time I saw it, the whole thing was painted white, although I have seen it in grey before now. ā ā ā ā thingās bugging me now Iāve started.
āUse a nameā has put a link up which gives a brilliant view but Iām no nearer solving the riddle.
