Bonnie Lass I agree that horses have as much right to use the roads as anyone else, to say that as they were here first gives them more right is not correct though. Roads exist because of motor vehicles, if not for them we’d only need unpaved tracks instead of concrete and tarmac.
I suspect the Romans may beg to differ…
[Monty Python Voice] What have the Romans ever done for us ?[/Monty Python Voice]
Well they built paved roads to make it easier for said 'orses to pull carts
Good point, well made. I suspect however you have reinforced my view though, carts have wheels see. Ergo, paved roads for wheels, unpaved roads for hooves.

Horses were our transport, in war ,agriculture, pest control, making of medicine, emergency services, industry.
They have more right to be on the roads than any motorised vehicle, they helped shape our country.
Yep, unfortunately this is the attitude of most horse riders. They aren’t paving the way for industry anymore, they’re inconveniencing everyone bar the selfish sod sat on it for “fun.” I’m using that term very loosely.

Hi maoster, without horses making the foundation or shaping our country before vehicles even existed gives me reason to remark ’ they have more right’ , without their efforts & use of purpose the country may not be what you see today.
Roads were made originally to make travel easier for anything before motor vehicles came, dirt tracks were hazardous & stoney causing breakages to wheels & hooves also causing bruised soles & lameness, & ways of improvement were cnstantly made, vehicles today now shape modern roads and upkeep them for the future.

Rhythm Thief:
Horses and pedestrians (and, dare I say, cyclists) use the roads by right. Everyone else needs a licence .
I must say I’m quite depressed by some of the attitudes displayed on this thread. I’d always be ready to stop for a horse if the rider appeared uncomfortable.
It makes sense to stop for a horse if you see or think there may be a problem.

Modern times have altered .
So what about the people who have to earn a living from the equine industry? What about their livelihoods?
Unfortunately there are selfish sods in all walks of life .
The only place horses should be is in fields or on race tracks. If getting them to either involves traversing a road then they should be forced to go in a horse box or other suitable vehicle.

Why?
Because they are pointless and a menace to society.

Cobblers. Find yourself regularly “menaced” by horses, do you? Thought not.

We have horses and your post made me properly LOL , best post on this topic so far
Fields and racetracks are the best places for the horses. There is no space on the roads as it is. The only people making money from horses, are bookies and Bostik.
I had a very friendly wave from a fine young filly this morning in South Elmham, after I slowed for her horse. In return I saw smashing pokies and a fine ■■■■■■■■■ to go with it.
Some years ago I was moving cattle for a local farmer out of the shed onto some spring grazing about 4 mile away. To reach the unloading point had to drive on a narrow lane just wide enough for a car to squeeze past. Saw two horse and riders approaching so pulled into the side as far as possible and switched off.
Just as the first horse was level with the cab the cattle In the back started shuffling about which upset the horse. It went up on to its rear legs, the rider came off, as the horse came back down it’s hoof just missed the cab but caught one of the wagon front wheel studs. The hoof was ripped off completely and blood was pumping out.
A vet was called out and the horse had to be destroyed where it stood. As the rider suffered slight injuries the police turned up but were not really interested.
Our insurance company were a bit nervous but a claim was never made.
Hiya…i go to France every year always have a fill of them. 30seconds on the barby turn over for
25 seconds done perfectly. always put plenty (and i mean plenty)of pepper on the meat or it a
little tough. i have frites with it sometimes and always red wine. its something we should do in
Brittian more…that would clear the roads a bit.

All credit to you there Nathan, the ■■■■■■■ aren’t normally THAT visible and the tail usually hides the ■■■■■■■■■ from view…
