Prop Shafts

When I was learning, I was told that booting it and turning sharply would snap the prop, particularly if you try to change gear at the same time and are heavily loaded. Dunno how true it is but I take care when pulling away from junctions with a load on.

I drove a Scannie a few months ago that had a vibration nobody could find the cause of. Had a full set of boots, even went into Scania.

I found it as I slowed down for the sliproad at Howden…the propshaft centre bearing cradle parted company from the chassis. Went with one hell of a bang.

not sure about other makes but scania havent had grease points on props (tractor units and smaller rigids) since around the year 2000

I was in the middle of one of the busiest roads in Brisbane with a scania, just rolling towards a set of red traffic lights. The lights went green, as I predicted and I slipped it down a couple of cogs and watched the rev counter go round, but thought ‘that’s funny, I ain’t going any faster’, the rear uj had simply fallen apart and with no boasting, I’m a real smoov driver.
You shoulda seen the traffic jam I caused; not enough steam to clear the junction and couldn’t stop before it… chaos.

i’m in a x plate 00, not sure if its got a grease able prop or not?

When I was fitting for Tilcon in the ‘70’ s and ‘80’ we were fitting new props almost every day, especially when the trucks (Foden 8 leggers) got bogged down or were reversing up stone heaps to tip on top… They would always break at the narrowest part of the shaft where the diameter was small on the sliding joint, on the plus side we never had half shaft breakages. Fodens made larger shafts with the same diameter the full length and we had no more problems.
Nowadays I would imagine that shafts have been improved and, if well lubricated, should stand up to abuse better than in the past.

Pete.

Just before I left the UK i worked for a firm with a fleet of FHs, there were a couple of right animals on there, revving the nuts off the motor 1st thing in the morning, pulling away before the brakes released & in too high a gear, that sort of behaviour, these blokes also rather predictably went through clutches all the time & in the short space of time I was there they both got towed in because the prop UJs had failed, so in answer to your question, yes they can.

depends on what has specificaly happened to the prop■■?
if it come away at the u/j,that is wear and tear, poor maintenance.
if has broken the centre bearing(carrier),again poor maintenance.
if it is twisted in its main body(i have only ever seen one in thirteen years when i was a mechanic, due to an over zealous driver clutch/throttle combo.

doesn’t happen very often,BUT it does happen.
fully loaded drawbar outfit doing an uphill start…was a bit worried my F10 might do the same as i have broken a half shaft on that in the distant past, but no problems there.
took it back to the workshop and removed prop…

and took it to have a new shaft welded in,repaired the hydraulic pipes and re-filled with oil and away she went. :sunglasses:
