Edit - I saw one of Icelands driver of the year trucks in Kent the other week, driver was polishing away like no tomorrow, I didn’t want to upset him as he looked so happy but ffs it’s a Renault Premium has he not heard the term “you can’t polish a turd”?
phantom309:
White diamond is the best metal polish about IMO …depending on the state of them when ya start use auto sol first
If it’s solely based on fuel economy then I’m surprised as in my experience Renault Premium’s are not the best on fuel, we used to get 8.5 out of them, we now get upwards of 10 out of a Actros

I hope all those that clean their trucks get paid for it and also your employer buys the clothes cleaning materials etc.
Right mugs if your not it is a shame some employers don’t think as highly about their drivers as their drivers do about the trucks
But why do you care? If somebody wants to spend their time cleaning/polishing someone else’s lorry, does it affect you in any way, shape or form?
If it’s expected, then yes, you’re right, the company should provide the equipment and should also pay for the time taken, but if somebody wants to do it off their own back, let em, everyone has a hobby, some people go bird watching, support a football club, play darts/pool/billiards/bridge/wife swapping etc etc etc, some people like tarting up lorries, each to their own…

It could affect me in some shape or form for example if i worked alongside someone who as you indicated likes cleaning their truck for a hobby and myself who wouldn’t our employer could easily look on one person more favourable than myself you know where im coming from here

Sucking up is what they call that, but here’s the thing with that, if the boss wants that kind of thing, he should put his hand in his pocket, I’m with you on that.
On the other hand, if you’re being paid by the hour and you have a bit of waiting time where you can stay in or by your lorry, what is wrong with looking after it, you are on company time, it’s a piece of company owned equipment and if cleaning/polishing products are provided or reimbursed there is no reason why you shouldn’t do it, many other industries require machine operators to look after the equipment that they operate and keep it clean.
Another way to look it at it, if you had a company car, say a nice C Class or whatever, would you look after it or not? It’s the same thing, it’s not yours, you just drive it…
You will find Peek reasonably cheap if you make a search on the net, say £13 to £15 for a 1 litre can.
Last tin i bought from chemiclean.co.uk/ and bought some other stuff at the same time to qualify for free postage, about the cheapest i’ve ever seen it.
Lots of elbow grease needed, if they’ve been neglected you may never get the pitting completely out, i find a fairly rough rag the best for rubbing the polish with, fairly damp rag too which helps make the polish go further, fine mesh rag such as an old shirt too soft and doesn’t cut so well, but obviously fine for buffing up.
Good for you taking a pride, too few left.
Cheers for that, going to try some autosol on them I think, there is a small amount of pitting so will have to see how they come up.
I used autosol on the fuel tank, the wheel trims and the exhaust cover. Then peek on the wheels.
If you have pitting, polish the pitted areas the best you can, and soak the pitting with WD40. I’ve found that the WD eats into the brake dust so most of it comes off the next time you clean it. Rinse and repeat until you get all the pitting off. At the moment I spray a bit of WD on when I’m down the road or after I polish the front wheels.
When these tyres on the front wear down I’m going to get super single durabrights on the front. Normal Alcoas are nice but they’re a bugger for collecting brake dust unless you polish them from day one.

Agreed, i was lucky enough to be able to get a finish on mine during a dry spell between winter salt baths when brand new, hell of a job to do anything with them once the salts done its worse.
Handy tip about WD40, thanks.
A worthwhile bonus to keeping your motor well is it gets up the nose of some who don’t, their sarky comments only encourage extra effort to attain the mirror finish to annoy them more…
edit…brake dust? you shouldn’t get any, especially with a Volvo…
If I get a spare 5 minutes and the unit I’m using for the night is a bit tatty then I’ll nip round to the jet wash and give it a good spraying but that’s about it. If I had the same truck every night and I knew someone else wasn’t going to use it then I’d be getting the flash dash out on my breaks and probably give it a sponge down every other day.
Cab and chassis washed weekly if I get back early enough on a friday, if not I don’t, but will wash it through the week.
Interior, the bit I live, in is spotless, swept cleaned and polished regularly, because it is just that…the bit I live in.
Could not be remotely arsed to polish tanks or wheels ffs, my job is a job not a ■■■■■■ hobby , done it a long time (maybe too bloody long) so all the wide eyed enthusiasm disappeared yearrrrrs ago, if that makes me a… whatever you guys want to call me, then so be it maybe I am.
Note to MR Scania 730 I don’t drive apiece of ■■■■ it’s 63 plate Actros, and I don’t spend my wages on polish and ■■■■ for the truck exterior for the same reason that I don’t buy tyres and fuel for it … It aint mine !

That’s the way to do it just keep it clean you don’t always need to polish it
At the moment I have a 57 reg Scania high line. Only on lease until our new MAN’s arrive but is washed every week, windows and mirrors always clean and like new inside. As has been said, you spend more time in it than at home so a bit of pride doesn’t go amiss!
Beats sitting in the cab for 45 minutes playing with myself. I just want durabrights so I can go full on like the Ronnie Barker drivers do and polish the cab steps and catwalks
bloody hell mark you don’t need to one up me fella!
I cant even get my motor washed! No fascilities to.
The only time it gets a wash is at MOT time every July! The cab is spotless though and I like to keep it that way.
