Pioneer Concrete Mixers

On the subject of mixers.Years ago, some firms ran half cab Fodens with mixer bodies . . what was the advantage of using a half cab ?

Hi Suedehead, the half-cab configuration was used mainly for quarry dump trucks where there was no real need for a passenger compartment and it also gave fitters easier access to the engine before tilt cabs were introduced. As you say, they were also used in other applications for concrete mixers, also for tippers and tractor units on general haulage (as mentioned in Welshphil’s posting above), where the half-cab was a cheaper option to the full width cab, it also prevented passengers being carried.

Hi again Suedehead, Thanks to our mate Bubbs once more, here’s one from his Scrapbook Memories illustrating the half-cab concept:-

Did they do a sleeper cabbed version ?

Regarding S50 half cabs Tilcon ran them on distance from Derbyshire to the Isle of Wight (there and back the same day) Truro, Scotland, London etc so they were not confined to local work! I posred a thread on them earlier this year.

Pete.

i’ve got a picture of that guy AUY 98M and although it’s in black and white i think it looks as it is preserved on the rally scene!. yep just checked and you can see the exhibitors badge in the windscreen.

The Guy Big J6 was brought new from Lex Halesowen by my father ,the biggest mistake he ever made according to my mother , the diff went on the way back from Winget ,it hadn’t even done it a days work ,in fact it wasn’t even painted, once on the road the same problem happened again on the first load,I think he kept it for about 12 months then sold it to a chap at the Stoke plant and had an older guy big j( F reg I think )off him which was a much better motor,AUY98M was seen at a plant in Yorks a few years ago,and we saw it at the vintage show when it used to be at the truck stop on the A5 at Rugby.

This is Pioneer Castleford before it went to Hanson

Pioneer Oxford plant was next to Readymix on Langford Lane Kidlington. They moved out and Topmix had it and it’s now mothballed. Pioneers plants at Brackley and Warwick were transferred to Smiths Concrete (part owned by Hanson) shortly after Hanson bought out Pioneer. Brackley’s currently mothballed but Warwick plant still operates under the shadow of Bubbenhall and Stratford plants. Bartletts run materials into there as far as I know although R Adams send their 8wheelers into there aswell apparently.
Does anyone remember Brian Finch? He was an od for Pioneer based out Worcester way and then worked for Smiths until retirement.

A sad end for this old pioneer mixer!!
