Most public weight bridges will charge between 5 and £10, I just use sites I deliver to just ask them nicelyaand they will give you a reading,

Being very new to lorry driving, could I turn up at a local weigh bridge and ask if i could find out the weight of the lorry unloaded? Would there be a charge? Is this normal practice?
Th reason I’m asking is that i have started work last week and have to driver a 3 axle 26T tipper with a HiAB on it and don’t want to be done by VOSA/DVSA for overloading as i dont know how much load I can carry. Also, is it illegal to carry a load below the sides (3-4’ high) without strapping it down? eg concrete beams ? Also am I right in thinking that if I am carrying sand, that it has to be covered irrespective if it is below the sides?
My boss said it is fine but i seem to remember that it has to be covered.
Thanks for your help.
I used to load tippers in a gravel pit and 6w hiabs (if they wanted a full load) would carry around the 13t mark. No you don’t need to strap as the body is designed to hold the load although be wary of wet loads seeping through around the tailgate.
You’re meant to sheet if there’s a likelihood of the load blowing off ie if the load is dusty or obviously if quarry rules say so.

If you do check your tare just weigh again when loaded with concrete beams as you don’t say what lenght the lorry is or axle configuration ,the load of beams may need moving back to suit the front axle weight in which case I’d advise you to strap the beams
MY scania 26t g-cab curtain`s TARE is 15,500kgs. No taillift. full tank and driver.
Front is easy to overload. Gross front axle is 7500kgs net is 4500kgs. MAX 3ton up front.

Don’t you mean the the front axle tare is 4500kgs m8 ? Edit 15500kg is a very heavy tare weight !

Yeah, ive had a few beers. TARE is 10,500kgs. Payload is 15,500kgs. Front axle max plate weight is 7,500kgs.
Hope that makes senses.
Happy DAYS!!! TAXI
10.500 no taillift makes sense, mine is 11.300 with one. The Daf CF tipper where I’m going to work tares at 9800. It’s an 02 but is in excellent condition and no sign of being sold as (when compared to Smiths FMX 6wheeler, the Volvo carries only 14500 )
Webbs of Armscote have an immaculate L reg Merc SK that carries 16.800 (no wonder they wont retire it).

Mine weights 12.5t with a full tank so I round the max load weight to 13t but remember to keep an eye on the front axle weight.
A set of Super Singles on the front would allow you to up the weight on that axle wouldn’t it?
Is it not the whole axle that needs to be rated ? and on the VIN then … dont think its just tyres ?
I thought the axle didn’t need Changing, just put the singles on then visit VOSA to get it uprated?
By fitting 315 or 385 tyres (which I think might be rated the same ) all this does is take a 7100 axle to 7500 and no more ,anything rated over 7500 has to be 315 or 385 .you can only uprate to the max design weight ,otherwise it’s a new axle needed .
The lard arse shed I have to endure tares at 16T due to the loader on the back and 16380 with grab, chains fuel and driver.
Payload is therefore (only) just over 9500 KG.
