“Collett Bros Foden. Anyone know where they were based ■■”
Hi Dean I’m fairly sure they were from Witney or thereabouts.
Oily
Whilst grab lorries are incredibly common nowadays with just about every tipper operator having them I would say it was very rare in 1964, would I be correct? I’m struggling to think of one local company that had one.

Kempston,
I’m struggling to think of one in the 1970’s and early 80’s!

I agree with both of you, must’ve been a very forward thinking company but what I’m struggling to understand is why they took so long to take off.

Guessing this would be late '60s early '70s en-gb.facebook.com/HIABLoaderCr … 882645482/
Oily
When I worked as a mechanic in Reading back in the late 1960’s one of T.W Wards BMC FJK eight ton extra long wheelbase rigids broke its chassis in half behind the cab exactly where the Hiab was fitted. It was loaded with cast iron gas valves, they transhipped the load onto another truck and when they weighed it found that the load weighed fifteen tons! This happened on the A4 bridge on Berkeley Avenue, the main route east and west before the M4 was built, and caused massive tailbacks. So Hiabs were around in the 1960’s.
Pete.

Not too sure if this is an ex DTS unit from Cramlington their older colour scheme was a bit like that.
Thanks for the possible name chap.

“DEANB”Charles Ford Atkinson with a Hands trailer with telehoist tipping gear. Anyone know where Charles Ford were based ■■
Charles Ford (or Charles E Ford & Co. of Bristol on a Sunday ) were a subsidiary of Guest’s of Bath; another photo of that motor appeared in an article in ‘The Atkinson’ about Guest’s in 1970, at which time it was the only vehicle operated in that name. It ran grain from Avonmouth to London.
You did well to remember that Chris.

Thanks for confirming Chris.

“coomsey” Hope your paying attention mucker !
Dean, I’m like Dumbo! All ears good bit of kit, not too happy about the dropsides though. I had a Reiver with the same body as this gal, the boss Maurice Hicken was like most gaffers n women,he couldn’t make his mind up wether to have the sides up or down. Lot of hard work for sweet Fannie Adams
Nice pic “coomsey”
Those bodies were not so good for the driver ,mind you the exercise probably did you good ■■?
But from an operator’s point of view they were a good idea as you could obviously do much more work.
Heres another advert for a similar body from 1964.

Hi Dean,
Yates brothers started out as Canal transport and had a big fleet of boats and were based on the Cannock extension canal just off the Turf Island on the A5 near Brownhills. They ran a large fleet of F86 tippers and I cannot remember seeing anything in their fleet more modern than an F7.
They even had, or still have, their own sport and social club on site, Cheer’s Pete
Thanks for the info Pete, the owners were obviously very shrewd running F86’s.
Heres another dodgy quality pic.

Just to be sure, I went and checked with the same article you’ve just posted
There is still a surviving Guest Atkinson, although it’s not in their colours. It belongs to Pannell Commercials, and I believe it’s currently stored undercover with their mighty Atkinson BT tractor

Thanks very much for those, Dean - I do remember the article about the tugs in Tr*ck magazine
Here’s the BOAC-liveried 747 parked at St Athan a couple of weeks ago - supposedly it is being preserved, but just standing there indefinitely isn’t gong to do it much good
Up close and personal with a 747 freighter at Stansted in 2017 - and you thought that a Nöteboom Combitrailer had a lot of wheels!
Houston, we have a problem…

First time I ever flew was on a monarch Airbus A300 and I went up on the flight deck, amazing experience and something that will never be repeated now.
Dean Truswells are now based in Barnsley but originally from Sheffield over 100 years in business quite a large outfit and still family owned proper hau lier.
Hi Dean,
Rheads are from Stoke on Trent, I can remember them pulling for Pandoro back in the 90’s, if it is the same Rheads!

Nice to hear that they have been operating for over a hundred years “Singo55” and are still an independent company. There cant be that many hauliers
that have been going that long that have not been taken over by a larger concern.
Heres another one.
