“Punchy Dan” Those Dumpers have had some names through out the yrs ,Aveling Barford ,Aec ,Leyland and Scammell.

They were all AEC 690 Dumptruks from the model’s inception in 1961 to end of production. The only change in specification from beginning to end was replacing the AV690 engine with the AV760. There was also a 6x4 tractor unit version, model Leyland LD55 for exporting to third world countries. I did have a series of photos of LD55’s on forestry logging work in Africa the terrain was best described as “challenging”. Unfortunately i no longer have the photos. The AEC 690 Dumptuck was variously built at the former Maudslay plant at Alcester, Thornycroft Basingstoke, and Scammell Watford.

Good stuff Graham. Heres a bit about the AEC 690,released in 1964.

Here’s a bit about it in Leyland’s LD55 form in Africa like you mentioned working in the logging industry. Tough old motors.

Yes, that’s the article I wrote about them. Was it really 19 years ago? The African photos were taken by an AEC / Leyland service engineer.

Ben Bennett’s Quarry just up the road from me had some ,I think one was badged Scammell and 1 or 2 badged as Aec but with the triangle rather than the grill letters .

Some Welsh motors.

First off Paul has sent me this pic today and asks if this is the same Alan Price as the blue bulkers we have had on here ?

Hi Dean, and Paul. Yes the FH is Alan Price & Sons of Bargoed (Deri) The white deer are the give away here as when Alan retired he bred deer on his farm. Thirty eight years ago I worked for Alan, a real character but true gent. Aploagies if I mentioned this before, started as Alan Price & sons Red Shale & Ash, then Bulk Haulage and nowadays Bulk Waste.
The sons being Raymond and David, with their sister Mary running the office back then along with Alan and his wife. A great family. Never a dull moment there!

Regards Paul

Hello DEAN ,thanks for another A E Goughs Scania ,they must be a favorite with Paul ,they have a DAF XF ,now one for him to look out for ,Trevor

Hi Dean

I don’t know Jeremy Walker’s F12 but it looks like the Science museum at Wroughton airfield to me. I haven’t been for years but they used to have open days every now and again. Some great exhibits in all the hangars - does anyone know if they are all still there?

I did a bit of casual for John around 80ish, he had about 4 of those Mercs, as far as I remember…wish I could read that nameplate, I knew most of those lads…think it could be ‘‘Tom’’ , if so it’s Tom Pattinson who tragically died in an accident at Curries depot in the 90s I think.
I’ve put that pic on the ‘‘■■■■■■■ co.s’’ thread Dean, in case any of the local lads missed it on here…hope that’s ok mate?

I have to say i am not a fan of those little wheels they really spoil the look of any motor in my opinion.

I expect you are right “Piston broke” about where the pic was taken. We have had a few of that nice looking motor pulling a
showmans engine. I will see if Paul knows for definate if it was taken at Wroughton.

Heres another dodgy one of it.
