Safeway Supermarkets was acquired by Morrisons in March 2004.
Most of its 479 shops were rebranded as Morrisons, with others being sold off.
The brand disappeared from the United Kingdom in November 2005.

In November 2016, Morrisons announced that the Safeway brand would be revived on a range of food products, manufactured in the company’s
own factories, for distribution through independent retailers within the United Kingdom.

Safeway ran a large fleet of Borderers back in the day keeping them in their
fleet for around nine years, these were based at their Cambuslang depot in Scotland.

Morning Dean.

Bell Line drivers used to changeover at Symonds Yat in the 70s,they had marked out bays for parking.
I think Bevans of Newport was one of the main contractors for Bell Line at the Welsh end,not sure about Middlesborough. The ERF in the photo has a Cardiff reg.

Hi Chris ,…yes that ERF has a Cardiff reg it is a 1979 unit …HB was the former Merthyr reg up until 1974,when the reg was surrendered to Cardiff …DW the former Newport issue also became a Cardiff reg …
John Stephens had several of those ERFs that purple livery …as did Russell Bevan …remember them loading up at Hoovers Merthyr …DEAN ,and Paul always fab stuff from S Wales …lol …Geraint

The only time i saw a Merthyr reg was on the Corporation buses .!! fair play they did look after them always looked smart ,regards Keith

Hi Geriant, I never realized Merthyr Tydfil gave up the HB registration to Cardiff. Back in the summer holidays of 74 my father and I stopped off at Bakers (Ford) and Howells (Leyland) dealerships in Merthyr checking out all the new vehicles waiting for delivery in August all having HB on their number plates and in order, eg HHB 123/124. If it had GHB it meant the car was older. August to August.
Probably makes sense though as the last Transit we had from Bakers was B824 CUH.
It would be interesting to find out who owned the John Stephens ERFs from new. I doubt if he put new motors into Bells. Russell did in the early days but wasn’t he the main contractor there?

Keith, Merthyr Corporation ran a nice fleet, especially their old maroon Leyland double deckers PD2s I think. Used to ride them often as a school kid.
I put in for a diesel fitting apprenticeship with the corporation but got knocked back, as although I went to High School in Merthyr I lived in another valley being Rhymney. My friends friend from Merthyr Vale got the job. Great training too!

Yeah thats true ,my uncle drovefor Morlais services some of thier buses were Merthyr reg .
Carline Transport ,had a batch of Scanias that were R230-240CHB ,but registered in Cardiff ,hey DEAN any Carline pics ? dont think we have seen any so far ,thanx MT

Mantronic, Morlias coaches, that’s a blast from the past. They had the school contract from Cefn Gola (Tredegar), Rhymney and Pontlottyn to Bishop Hedley in Merthyr back in the 70s. Spent 5 school years traveling on those coaches. We lost out really as the rest of Tredegar and Ebbw Vale had R.I.Davies of Tredegar who had a smarter fleet than Hills did at the time.

Best wishes from a rainy stay at home Florida day. A day to reminisce!

Another nice batch of photos Dean, thanks.A little story about a Scammell Trunker of Bird’s Eye Foods.
When I was on nights in late 60s I used to see a Bird’s Eye artic regular either south of the Blackwall Tunnel,in the tunnel or on Commercial Road. One night I followed one through the northbound and noticed bits of tunnel masonry falling around my AEC,so I kept back. When I got on Commercial Road I flashed him and he stopped. I told him what had happened and it dawned on the driver that his Trunker was higher than the AEC Mandator that he usually had. When we looked at the front n/s corner of the trailer there was a tiny bit of damage but nowt serious. The height limit is 4 meters according to Wiki but it used to be in old money and there were gantry type structures at the approach,if you couldn’t get under them then you couldn’t use the tunnel. So his fridge trailer can only have been a gnat’s too high - unless he ignored the warning.

Thanks for your comments Chris. :unamused:  Did you ever driver one of those trunkers ?

"DEANB"Mansell Volvo F88. Anyone know where they were from ■■

Ray, one from Wigan. Warburton Carriers DAF.

Hi Dean, The Mansell Volvo is from Bogroll & Kitchen Roll manufacturer whose full title was
Mansell, Hunt, & Catty Ltd. Their factory was at Blackrod, just off the A6, between Bolton
and Chorley. I think, but I may be wrong, that this factory became part of the Fort Sterling
operation, they were also manufacturers of Bum Fodder.
Also, Thank you for the Warburton Transport picture, I will try and borrow it for the Wigan
Transport Companies thread. As ever, I am grateful for your input on this and other threads.
Kind Regards, Ray.

Thanks for the info Ray. I will pop that pic on your Wigan thread.

Hi Dean, I remember M & S Motors from Atherton. The Mill towns of Atherton, and nearby Leigh, Tyldesley,
and Wigan were originally in Lancashire, but in the major UK boundary changes of 1974, they became part
of Greater Manchester County, and received the title of “The Metropolitan Borough Of Wigan”. Before the
changes, the population of “The County Borough Of Wigan” was about 90,000, its population is now 300,000
because all of these towns belong to Wigan Council. :unamused: It means that the M & S DAF is a Wigan Wagon.

Looks well that wagon Gaz,all credit due to you.
Did your dad ever do the Stainmore changeover with Smith of Maddiston early 80s?

Hey up Chris thanks for your kind words the picture was taken several years ago
Unfortunately I had to let her go a few years ago due to ill health
My Dad was a roamer at Stirlands but he probably did the odd changeover at Stainmore as I did now and then in the early nineties as I too was a roamer
The changeover then moved a few times
To Crooklands then Carnforth then onto Lymm then finally Carlisle
Cheers Gary

I got a lift with a SOM driver from Penrith to Stainmore and a Stirland driver from there to J1 M18 one night mid 1980.I’d left a wagon at Penrith that night when I worked for MFS Maltby and log booked it back (with train fare in pocket). The Stirland wagon was a V reg Sed Atki with 180 I think, the SOM was a B Series ERF with ■■■■■■■ and Fuller.I was picked up at midnight and was at J1 M18 at 0330.Rock on.

Didnt Stirlands do a lot of work for Boots Nottingham, thank you Trevor

Hi Trevor,

Yes Stirlands did some trunks for Boots as did Smith of Maddiston from Manchester to Maddiston,I regularly took a trailer of Boots gear up to Garstang on a night trunk change over with a Maddiston driver.

David
Hey up David
Stirlands worked for Boots for over 50 years along with other contractors such as BRS,BFI.Marshalls,Wm West,George Dominic’s and later on Clearway Distribution
Stirlands trunks were Aldershot,Cardiff.Stainmore,Bedford/Wellingborough,Dartford and Greenwich
Stirlands pulled out of Boots in the early 2000s due to poor rates
Cheers Gary
I believe they were part of TDG as were Western Transport who had the Boots contract in Cardiff for many years.
