I reckon Harvey may know about Moreys from Ringwood.
Good morning Dean, one and all.
Robert Morey and his brother ran tippers and the story is they got a permit to remove the old RAF Ibsley concrete runways and found gravel beneath.
Taking on a chap called Mike Adams they set up a DAF franchise called “Adams Morey” at Blashford just down the A338 from the air base.
The gravel bank was huge, now about 7 very large lakes.
They sold off the old depot and yard ( now a trading estate) and bought the old Leyland depot at Redbridge and old Princes depot Milbrook road.
They still have Redbridge. Buzzer uses it as he said.

PS: RAF Ibsley built 1940 and after 7 Uk squadrons used it USAAF took over in 1942, largest concrete base in south of England.
Bet you wished you never said out!!! Harvey

I actually found that very intresting Harvey thanks for posting it.
Did the McQueen blue DAF bring back any memories ? I can remember seeing the truck
but dont know anything about the company.

Thanks for your comments Harvey.

I have posted this article before but it worth popping on again.

Thanks, Always had a soft spot for the little F86, little truck with a big heart.
Most of the wartime air fields arround the forest area had very large mines placed at intervals allong there lengh below the concrete to hinder any invasion and all details lost after the war.
When the first one was found by a Pecker driver at Ibsley even the birds went very quiet. Harvey

Morning Dean, some pics of 401,s some courtesy of Ron ,Jr. ran a lot of seddon,s joints had some and Owens had a load ,wm Morgan had a couple  courtesy of cc ,cracking pics as always

The last shot of William Morgan ,was with a Hay on Wye driver ,before that he drove a Marathon ,in earlier years Hay was a change over point ,between Pressed Steel and the Midlands .
Morgans had about 10 Sedatks ,but always remembered for thier Borderers , as they hauled themselves up the Crai .
DEAN ,some great stuff ,would Paul have taken shots of Joseph (Jonah) Jones also of Ystradgynlais ,he had ERFs ,and like Morgans an immaculate fleet ? MT

Hello DEAN ,and MT,
Yeah Wm Morgan ,i agree had an immaculate line up of Atki Borderers …probably the smartest in S Wales .
Joseph Jones ,also had a few AEC 8 leggers …he had an Atki 8 tipper based at Gwean cae Gurwen on open cast work …some great stuff as usual Dean !..Geraint

Via Gellia Transport.
Hi, Dean. Named after the route of the A5102 between Grangemill and Cromford in Derbyshire. Proper stone-hauling country! It’s a bit winding and a bit narrow in places but a favourite road with the tipper lads.
No doubt one (or more!) of my fellow posters from East of me will put me right if I’ve got it wrong. If only they were so keen when it comes to taking their turn at buying breakfast!

The road built by the Gell family ,( a cafe on the road where visiters passing through can buy locals breakfast ) the company formed in the 80s from a Tarmac manager ( the Mrs’s uncle ) buy out backed by a local exporter scrap breaker ect ( also called other names ) , consisted of Tarmac lorrys tippers and tanks also bought Ktm ,tilcon tanks ,Jw Dunn, they also had some lorries at congleton but the drivers over in the west arnt up to much    , iirc around 2006 ■■? The backer pulled the plug .i think I’ve got it right .

I reckon you’ve ALMOST got it right, Dan. Except the part about the “Western”-based drivers. And I wasn’t going to mention the café as we proper drivers never had time to stop there after waiting a couple of hours to get tipped at Longcliffe and trying to get to Matlock before the chaps went for lunch!

Thanks for your comments “Punchy Dan” and “ROF”

EDTRUCK:
Hi there Deanb

I can tell you quite a bit about the Mack.

She was built as a Ckd unit by Mack in France and delivered into the UK in late 1979 along with her sister to a hauler, Olga Cox Transport in Sutton Coldfield via Western Trucks in Lancashire. She ran on European groupage work for about 12 months when the finance company took her back.

I guess this is an operator who took her over from the finance house!

Do you any idea when/where the photo was taken?

Hello “EDTRUCK” Now thats intresting ,out of intrest how did you know it came from France. No doubt it
was either MABO in Paris who later sold the ERF Europeans or maybe Pamax that were also in Paris. If you
know which dealer it was i would be intrested to know ■■ Also if you know anything about the ERF’s being
sold in Paris i would like to know and Robert would be very intrested !

Heres a couple of adverts for MABO and Pamax.

The photo was taken on the road between Ferndown and Hampreston just past the Angel Inn on the
A348.

It may intrest you that T.J.Reed also operated this White Road Commander that was also taken at the
same spot.

Some odds and sods.

I dont think health and safety would be too impresed with the chaps stood under the truck ! :unamused:

I’m almost certain this Scania 81 was ex Multiple Fruit Supplies Ltd,part of Glass Glover Dist. group, and based at Maltby in it’s latter days, eventually disposed of around 1982/3. Maybe one of our Welsh lads could confirm if Gower bought it secondhand? It would have been sold by Camerons Barnsley when new, hence the Sheffield area reg plate. It was used as a standby drawbar unit and I think it had the auto box,I ought to know as I drove it on nights odd times.

Hi Dean, I think the Leyland is Prosper de Mulder, from Doncaster or Rotherham areas. Regards, Ray.

I think so too Ray,their Doncaster plant was at Bentley and they also had a place at Silvertown and another at Nuneaton.

Hi Chris. Gower had a factory in the old Ladyship Mills in Halifax. I believe the Scania has a Bradford registration " KU " . so it could be, ( in my opinion ), a Halifax based lorry ?
Also not sure that Gower ran any second hand lorries ?

Regards John.

Hi John, yes KU was originally Bradford but Sheffield after 1974. But anyway if Gower had a Halifax factory that would account for Camerons Barnsley supplying the 81. It was the reg plate that got me going,so I must be wrong. :frowning:

Hi dean, regarding the offal load ,a owner driver from Somerset used to load Coke out of port talbot,he was saying one day vosa stopped him they wanted to see what was in the tipper he told them it’s offal the inspector climbed up the ladder grabbed the top of the body his hand slipped straight into the offal he got down then had the cheek to fine him for a trailer bulb out think it was to pay the cleaning bill

It didn’t matter whether you were catching one up or he were catching you up, bad bad bad news!!!
I’ve mentioned before I did a couple of loads from Croda Mkt Harboro to Liverpool, work clothes n boots into the bin. How did those guys do it? No sense of smell?

I think so too Ray,their Doncaster plant was at Bentley and they also had a place at Silvertown and another at Nuneaton.

And a depot at Widnes Dock. They used to act as a dealership disposing of their used vehicles, mainly through adverts in the transport press. Apparently, main dealers were loath to offer a decent trade-in price after a couple of years hauling the whiffy stuff.

Hi ROF,
Yep ! sorry to say there was no sensible market for “smelly” trucks, steam away all day and it made little difference so we had to get them undewriten by a dealer and that let to silly money offered to the operater.
I had dealings with on in Portchester who made glue out of cows horns and I had to make my visit the last one of the day. happy smelly days long gone. harvey

The…ahem…‘Animal by Products’ (offal) Leyland will be Prosper de Mulder, Doncaster. I used to deliver fuel oil to the plant. Stink ■■ that’s the understatement of the year. There is lots of ‘social housing’ around the area, how the hell they cope with the 24/7 smell is beyond me.
The main East Coast railway line runs alongside the plant.

A few years ago a Polish driver rolled one of Prospers artics over on the A65 at Long Preston (Nr Skipton). I’m told by the VOSA engineer who went out to the incident (my now retired brother) that the mess was indescribable. Brother David got the job of checking the vehicle for faults.

You had to negotiate two level crossings en route to PDM at Bentley Doncaster, one was the ECML and the other to Leeds. There was a notice up asking drivers not to let “waste” dribble out of their tippers whilst waiting to cross. :exclamation: You could get trapped between the two crossings, one of which was opened/closed by a woman,a huge woman who you wouldna argue with.
We used to take a spirit in there called SBP2, 6000 gallons at a time.Funnily enough the smell wasn’t too bad in the plant and the canteen was immaculate.
The worst smell ever was to be found emanating from Granox Ltd on West Bank Dock Estate Widnes which I believe belonged to PDM.Mix that with the aroma from Albright and Wilson’s site next door and it was summat that ICI couldn’t have made. Smell or no smell,it was a decent job driving for PDM,I once got a lift in one of their Doncaster-Silvertown trunk motors,a bonneted Merc it was,and the driver had been there years, telling me how good the money was.
