Hi Dean. Answering your question about Gulliver’s, yes they are still in business and quite a big company now.
When I worked for them in Cardiff 1990/91 between Gabe in Bristol and myself in Cardiff we had around 300 vehicles. They now have eight depots around the country and 5000 vehicles, many municipal special vehicles. Gabe’s oldest son rejoined the company in 1992 and has been very successful.
The transport fleet grew from 6 to 12 contract motors and 6 from the rental fleet. The rental business was slow at that time and Gabe’s youngest son ran the transport side out of Cardiff. Their main contract was from France with chickens and turkey into the U.K. Most of the outbound work was from North Devon Meats.
Unfortunately, they lost the French contract and with trailers being burnt and loads being destroyed in France Gabe pulled the plug on it in September 1991. The trailers went back to TIP and CTR, the units into the rental fleet.
I left to emigrate to the States, as it happens so did the manager of the Bristol depot too!

Gabe Harding, a real gent and fantastic boss.

Thanks for your comments Paul. I did not realise they were still going. They certainly have grown if they
now own 5,000 vehicles. I can remember them shipping out to France with fridges.

Foresters Atkinson from The Forest of Dean.

That’ll be Free Foresters, I presume? Although the name seems to have been taken off the tractor, and there’s a different name on the trailer frame

The fiat possible be Gary Barclay cockney boy subbing for r nessbert of whitchurch cardiff it looks like a nessbert trailer smashing bloke only a wild guess regards rowly

A03793p.JPGHolt Lane Transport of Whiston were big Atkinson operators.

After they closed down in 1986 their old yard became a graveyard for quite a long time and during that period every single windscreen and along with all the other windows in every vehicle were smashed.
Virtually all the Atkinson’s were broken up when Walsh & Dearden cleared the site.

Fortunately one of the lucky survivors that escaped the blow torch and was restored to it’s former glory was Atkinson ‘Black Knight’ Reg No ATD 898E pictured above which was new in January 1967 and can still be see at various rally’s today.

Don’t want to be a smart arse here  , but (as far as I know) The Sweeney car was a 3 litre Ford Consul.

That was because they used an M reg when the old Consul name was used to denote the manual 3.0 version and/or trim spec but still used together with the Granada name. While if it had been a new one in the late 70’s by then the Sweeney spec version had changed to the 3000 S.

I know we’ve moved on  , but this is the silver Granada 3.0S used in the later series of The Sweeney.

Hi Dean. Yes I do remember that weekend as I had finished to emigrate on the Thursday and the Rays trouble began on the Friday iirc. I stopped by the office on the Saturday morning to find Paul Marsh manning three phones trying to reach Ray to find out if they could get him home.
Ray’s truck is on the left in the photo one of six H reg 2435s. The one on the right is my old truck which Mark took over when I joined the Truck Rental operation. It was one of six G reg 2435s G580XAE. I had it brand new. We transferred the GTH 1 plate off a plain white 2035 that had been involved in an accident. Funny how I can remember as far back as that 27 years, but I had to write a list of crap I had to do today on my day off ffs.
Fair play to Ray, he and his son have done well in a very tough game!

Regards Paul

Hi dean and Paul John, gullivers of Bristol and the Volvo done by our own mr cooper how’s the weather it’s heatwave time over here cheers John

I wonder if that Scania 81 was one of P J Butler’s of Oldbury, they did a lot of work for Albright and Wilson.

I think that Allbright and Wilson had a depot at Tat Bank near Tilcons readymix plant that we delivered aggregates to occasionally?

Pete.
