PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

Hi Folks, Humble pie time for me by the looks of it, TD100A it was, B for the 290 and the 120 in the F89, sorry , please put it down to senility.
Attatched from the book of words I was given when I joined a Volvo main dealership in 1975. Harvey

After the narrow chrome grill came the narrow black plastic one - on the last of the ‘240’s’, before the wide black plastic ‘290’ grill.
Also, I’m pretty sure that the bigger fuel tanks were an option, and the smaller rectangular tank was still the ‘standard’ tank.

Hello again Dai …and thanks very much forthe Greenings shots …Dad can remember Rhyddopollen having those Atkis stolen …it was said at the time maybe for thier Gardner engines …he adds Dai that you would remember Fred Jones …think they were based on the North dock …they had Atkis …but did they have a 4 wheeler which were unusual around these parts ?
I was always impressed with the Lloyd bros Crusaders !..Do you remember Dai Francis Gorseinon ? …think he had a scrap yard by the Bryngwyn works…the brothers bought one of his Atki Borderers on a M plate …Dai sorry to hear of your sad news concerning your sight . …Geraint

Hi Dai ,and Geraint ,didnt one of the Lloyd brothers have a stall in Swansea market ?
I can remember them doing a lot out of Alcoa to Ayrshire metals at Irvine , they backloaded with Gr stein firebricks . Dai Francis also hauled out of Bryngwyn ,also Greenings had a lady driver ,who at the time was married to a Joint Motorways driver , regards to you both Keith

RUBBISH one size tank on a brown trim only never a option

Hi Keith and Geraint,
It was Haydn Lloyd who had a veg stall at the market. Here,s a pic of Fred Jones the cooperage, Swansea docks.

Did a fair bit of second manning on long loads with this F88 this definitely had the brown interior spent many a night sleeping over the seats! I do remember the next F88 Stevens bought on a P plate had the blue interior.

Ooer, brown trim & looks like a small rectangular tank to me. What d’ya reckon Lance?

Sorry chaps but silly busy at the moment, will pop some stuff on over Easter. Not enough hours in the day
at the moment. :frowning:

Very quickly re the F88 . I think alot of the queries were to do with the change over. For instance the seats
were brown, but when the 290 came out they were then blue. I dont know if Volvo offered an option where
if you still wanted brown you could order that colour over the blue.Or maybe they just used up old stock ?
Again the small side lights above the head lights were round on the 240’s but the 290’s had round and square ones.
I often wonder if Volvo ran out of a certain thing on the production line they fitted what ever they had just to
keep production going ? Maybe Harvey may know ?

Anyway i will pop some stuff on over Easter regarding the F88 !

Pete smith, do you mean Ernie sayce from monmouth, thought he would have been retired long ago , if its the same one of course!

Morning Baz,
As far as I know it is the same Ernie, Robroy, the lad in the post above, sold a sed ak to Ernie and I asked on FB if anyone had a pic of it, no pic but as far as they know he is still around, that was him driving that DAF a few years ago! But has retired now according to the info! Cheer’s Pete

Yeh, that was the one I sold to Ernie, 290E ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ and complete with twin bunk space cab conversion.
Excellent motor for it’s day.
Started life as a 300 Gardner belonging to Air Products, then Roy Plevin (a wood products merchant from Oldham) who I bought it from.
… reg A423 GFA.

Anybody got any pics of it in either of those liveries??

Wow !! you lot have got my old grey cells working far to fast, not a good thing.
We never had an option when ordering a chassis, But !! we could say we want them the “same”, this could delay the delivery some what, depending on what was in the holding compound.
As with all manufacturers they like to use up stock especially when the next “up date” is coming off the line.
Owner drivers no problem, but I would allways request a full spec with chassis number so he/she new what was coming down the road and aproved it.
Size of fuel tanks was allways a problem when 6 wheel units were required, moving air tanks, batteries, spare whell carriers etc and the main dealer council had it on the top of thier agenda at most meetings.
Yes, a mix match was inevitable from time to time but only came to an issue when they were later in the collectors shows, ha !! Harvey

Thanks pete for the info, i worked a lot out of monmouth so knew ernie well, did a couple of backloads for him when he was “big” in gartcosh steelworks .later worked with his brother alan at AAGriggs in monmouth.pic is alan with there foden.

Did you know a guy who drove for him, he called himself ‘‘Bedstead’’ on the CB, he often used to go into Gartcosh…as I did.

Afternoon robroy, the only one i remember, i think his name was martin, tall, thin guy, spent the weekend with him once in the riggend cafe waiting to load out of gartcosh monday morning, was a long time ago though ,mid 80s!!
