Hi Dean, The S.W.T.D. Initials on the tanker probably meant “South Western Tar Distillers”,
and having a CG Reg. No…Salisbury Issue, formerly a Hampshire Reg. until 1974, so it will
be from your neck of the woods. Kind Regards, Ray Smyth.

I used to deliver Jag’s in to Skillbeach at Southampton, not the best of yards with a 10 car artic transporter.

Talking of Jag’s did you deliver any of these by any chance.

AEC Mammoth Major Eight Mk.II. The short radiator dates it pre-1939. Probably AEC 7.7 litre engine (some had an 8.8 litre), 4-speed gearbox, with 2-speed ‘booster’ box. Two gear change sticks. Top speed 28 mph when built. Payload as a flat 14 - 15 tons depending if 8x2 or 8x4.

Morning Dean,
The big J was owned by Whalley Transport from Wilnecote Tamworth, I think their yard was on the left hand side between some houses pre A5 by-pass, they also ran a Big J 6 wheel flat, Cheer’s Pete
ps. Dean, as Buzzer puts it,“I have had a Mary Hopkins moment”! was there an animal feed mill,Dalgety?, in Poole? I only tipped there once in 1990! Last time I was in Poole was collecting asbestos containers out of the old Pilkingtons tile works and seem to re call that Mill being where the Asda is now?

Thanks for the information “gingerfold”. That top speed of 28mph reminds me of a conversation
i had with a drivers years ago. I remember him telling me that when the M1 first opened he used
to do a night run and would still use the A1 rather than the M1. The reason he did this was
because the heaters were rubbish back then, and he said it made the engine work harder which
in theory produced more heat. Not that there was alot of heat he said, and in the winter they
used to wrap newspapers around there legs to combat the cold.

Hello Pete, Thanks for your comments. Pilkingtons tile works are all gone now chap and
houses/flats have been built on that site. The mill you describe was where the Asda is now like
you say. When i first went there is was run by Christopher Hills / RHM but i think you are right in
saying it ended up as Dalgety. I think “gingerfold” knows about RHM as i seem to remember he
has commented on them in the past.

Always liked American trucks and luckily Mark took a holiday in America in the 1970’s.

In my opinion this was the best time for great looking American trucks.

Lets start with the Ford CL-9000 series.

Yes Poole has changed alot over the last 20 years. Amazing how many properties they have
managed to build on the Pilkington site. They have built opposite as well. :unamused:

A French trailer, so a deep pin, he probably had the 5th wheel slid right to the back to keep the fridge unit out of his bunk.

Hello Ray, S.W.T.D was just over the old Totton bridge going round the bypass towards the Marchwwod round-a-bout.
They were one of the countrys largest telephone post “picklers” and in the early 1950’s you could smell the tar and chemicals as far away as Southampton.
Now a big industrial estate. Harvey
