PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION (Part 1)

Thank you DEANB I will pass your comment on to the drive "THE HOFF " , he loves that wagon , I do not have the time to drive it but when I do its great , I stay local most weeks in my 6t Sprinter.

In 2019 this is up for replacement and I going to by a 12t MAN TGL and have that as my truck , i am going to replace a 10t DAF this year with a 12t MAN TGL for my brother as his DAF is 15 years old .

my sprinter.

robroy:
Is that a sleeper pod on the top of that Albion.?
That motor must have been the 60s equivalent of a blinged up Topliner in it’s day.

I used to envy those guys who drove the Bedford Marsden vans, with all the living space in the cab, behind and above them…far better than sleeping across the seats, or parcel shelf of a TK anyway.

That Albion is still about, though it looks a bit different now, no sleeper any more. In the late seventies I was on holiday in the Lake District and spotted it working with a travelling theatre;

Then in 2013 I saw it at the AEC Society Newark rally;

IIRC I’ve since seen it advertised for sale somewhere since then.
EDIT: sorry for double post, don’t know what happened there!
Bernard

Hello ArcDaz ^^^^^. I notice that we’ve had several posts from you in which you quote all the previous posters but then you don’t say anything yourself. All you have to do is click on the QUOTE panel and then when all the writing comes up, start your own post AFTER all the writing. The last word is always ’

’ so start your first sentence after that  . Hope that helps. Cheers, Robert

Thanks for your comments “acd1202” about Bentum. Do you know if they have packed up now as i havent seen

Inside the ‘rip and tip’ shed at Riding’s old depot showing the last Van Benton tanker to be loaded at the now demolished Longridge depot.
Pallets were lifted onto the gantry and individual sacks were dropped onto the conveyor belt which were then slit open allowing the powder to fall into the tank below.
Riding’s started this particular operation back in 1983 at the request of ICI Ltd and it continued on this site at Longridge under various owners after Riding’s had gone, the last being Norbert Dentressangle, until the final day of operations on the 28th October 2017.

Parked in Riding’s old yard on the 28th October 2017 with the last load to leave the depot which is now being transformed into a housing estate and Aldi supermarket.

Hi. Dean yes I seen the Avalon nice pic of it and a good write up remploy had a load of demounts as well some pics of lloyds the bottom one was on the m4 by us in the bad snow off 76 or around there cheers John

LOL “Rip n Tip” shed! I remember watching Sayers Transport, Newbury do that in their warehouse. A gantry and 2 geezers equipped with Stanley knives filling a bulk tank of 25,560kg of plastic granules!

Is that a 416 Jakey ?

Would it be a 616?

its a 616 ,DAN. been a great motor ,I drive this one every day , local mainly . but I have got a semi sleeper ,night heater etc .

No relevence to anything, but the top ERF in GTR Lloyd colours is one of three wagons which had road-going pilot Gardner 6LXCT engines - prior to their sales release. There was one fitted in a Foden eight wheeler which was in the Kenneth Wilson fleet (I think it was Wilson’s - someone might like to confirm that) and the final one was in a Seddon Atkinson 400 Series tractor which served in the W&J Riding fleet - it carried the aptly-chosen monika of ‘Novelty’.

pete 359:
hi Dean,
That ERF had a rare (thank god) turbo gardner. Was a very troublesome engine and the truck usually got as far as strensham from south wales before overheating.Lloyds were a very old welsh firm, during the late 60’s John and Dai lloyd ran the firm after their father.looks to me, like the late Dai lloyd at the wheel there? though more often than not, that truck was usually driven (when it ran) by Norman Gillard (rip).

Thanks for the info Andrew ! Unusual to hear of a unreliable Gardner ! :unamused:

I think this was one of the Gardner pre-production trial engines, wasn’t it?

Hi,I would say that you are right there, afaiaa? tbh,my Gardner knowledge is very limited.Though i recall both the Lloyd bros.constantly mentioning to me how disapointed they were with that particular engine.Lloyd’s had many Gardners in ERF do well over a million miles without any major engine work needed.regards Andrew.

Thanks Chris & Andrew for your comments.

gazsa401:
The Turbo Gardner’s we ran gave us very little trouble the only failures we had was with the water pumps if they weren’t regularly greased
They tended to fail and with a good driver who could stop the engine quickly very little damage was done
If seizure did occur it always seemed to be number one piston that picked up
Here’s XRR 252Y when about a year old and then still going strong in the later blue livery some 13 years later also just in the background is B556 HAL one of the many ERFs and Seddon Atkinson’s that gave over 10 years plus service. Happy memories cheers Gary

Thanks for the pics Gary !

Good point Robert ! Would appreciate it if people can try and edit there posts when replying as there is no need to include all of the other
pics, writing when you are replying about a single pic/truck. Just make my life alot easier if people could try and do that. cheers Dean

Gabby Sayer, was responsible for looking after the trucks and trailers and took a lot of pride in doing so.
At one time in the Thatcham depot he had 3 wreckers, wow !!! rather look at them than the fleet.
I know Gary thought very highly of them as a company :open_mouth: Harvey
