I know the Mercury wasn’t the biggest unit & that trailers would bulk out before reaching max weight , but even at that , it looks to be a fairly tall trailer for its day :open_mouth:

:unamused:
I dont suppose cigarettes weight that much “Casual Observer” so probably use as larger trailer
as possible ? :unamused:

Here you go “Punchy Dan”

W.H.Phillips from Wirksworth. I reckon “Bonkey Dollocks” may be the man to ask Dan for pic’s of this
company !

They had a massive fleet of tippers, around 90 at one time I believe, plus they later bought Cook’s haulage from Wessington as well. flickr.com/photos/106795187 … 787220559/ They paid their drivers well, and when one left to start up on his own the gaffer gave him a key to the stores incase he needed any parts out of hours! When I started at Ballidon quarry they had around 40 trucks working from there, plus a few based at Tunstead near Buxton working from the tarmac plant there. Their large garage is still in Wirksworth on Water Lane. We had a few ex Phillips drivers on Tilcon, all good lads who worked hard.

Talbot transport Albion.

Talbot Transport from Sheffield. They were taken over by Robert Earls, Sheffield, along with Rivelin Valley Transport,I knew some of their drivers int 70s.

Richard Evans,Albert Evans’ son bought a Mandator int late 70s and I’ve always wondered who the previous owner was. I’m not sure if the sleeper was added when he bought it,it’s just that the livery he chose reminded me of the John Player Mercury with the CH Notts/Derby reg plate…

I have a load of 'em that were taken by the late Colin Wright in 1981. When I find the hard drive they’re on I’ll upload them.

A01582.JPGIn 1985 Smith and Robinson, who at the time were part of the Hargreaves Group, were taken over by United Transport International in a £3.5m deal.
The £3.5m cash price paid for the company included £1.5m to repay a debt to the Hargreaves Group.
The move added Smith and Robinson’s 185 tractor units and 290 chemicals, foodstuffs and petroleum tankers to UTT’s 450 strong tractor unit fleet.

We often double stacked pallets so 52 was sometimes the norm
Also at £75,000 a pallet the loads were very high value
