Thanks Dean,
If my small brain cells are still working, he bought a Tilt wagon and drag on leaving the Army and ran some middle east but of course the regulations, (even then) were very strict on explosive movement so he quickly changed and grew very quickly, Thanks again for the pictures, happy days. RIP Ian… Harvey

Did I read somewhere about him doing his first M/E trips in an Atkinson?

Could’nt say for sure mate,
First met Ian about 1975 with his Draw bar outfit, think it was an ex German 89 as his contacts were based in Germany, for obvious reasons as he was based there.
An Atky was however more than capable of doing the job though, if you had a good back !!! Harvey

7 R.K.Crisp were part of the Richards & Wallington Group based on Wharf Road Birmingham with 30 other depots spread out across the country.
The company had around 200 vehicles and did national and continental work with tilts and low-loaders.
20% of their work was for the British Crane Hire Corporation (BCHC).

Hi all,
Great photos yet again! Don’t know if it’s been mentioned? The green F86 was owned by D.Nicholls transport from Cardiff. The driver was known as “Dai the eye”. I love the Welsh haulage industry nicknames.I am told,“Moscow Beavan” was so called because he was the first driver to take a coach to Russia for Excelsior European coaches of Bournemouth.
Regards Andrew.

Thanks for that Andrew, now thats intresting about how “Moscow Beavan” got his nickname. I bet he
was intresting to talk to. Do you know when he did the Russia trip Andrew ■■ I never knew Excelsior
went that far.

A01572.JPGIs that an ex Rockware Glass Transcon?
The Ford Transcontinental, or ‘H Series’ given its proper name, was a popular motor back in the day.
Cant believe it was conceived in 1971 with production starting in 1975.
The first truck off the line was a 4x2 tractor sold to Simons International for Middle East runs.
Surprisingly production only last eight years until 1984 by which time a total of 8735 had been built.

Manchester Liners was a cargo and passenger shipping company founded in 1898, based in Manchester.

Manchester Liners Volvo F86 on the quayside at Salford Docks.

This was Manchester Liners offices at Salford in the 1970’s.

Manchester Liners quayside at Salford Docks the end came in 1988 when they were taken over by Orient Overseas Container Line.

ML5-001.jpgBeside having a large fleet of their own quite a number of haulage companies were sub contracted to transport their containers including Knowles Transport above and Austin Wilkinson below.

The late Austin Wilkinson stood in front of one of his ERF’s loaded with Manchester Liners folding containers.

Dean it’s just an observation but i think the last photos taken on the hill are actually parked up in a layby. There is two lanes out of where the lorries are and if this is around Monmouth Ross on wye wouldn,t have thought it was 3 lanes then, stand to be corrected of course.
If that is the case then the Marathon is definitely cooling down!!
