Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 2)

Or just the wrong truck for the job even by the standards of the mid 1970’s.It wouldn’t have been difficult to find something more suitable even if that’s brand new and 1973.
I saw an article in Truck magazine during the mid '70’s involving from memory an SA 400 running to Pakistan for Whittle.
Obviously also Bedford TM, NGC among other imports including American by that point.
I got crucified as usual for suggesting that the Ergo was only good for local delivery work.In fact that’s what it was actually designed for.Put an AEC bus motor in it perfect for local multi drop as a 4 wheeler rigid.

so backwards in the US. look how unsafe that is. be banned in Uk. US need to get upto date in the transport world

Well anything that takes the centre of gravity up that high is inherently unsafe, that goes for all tippers and high loads, which is where a professional driver comes in to eliminate as far as possible, the problem.

I have had all sorts of high stuff in my time, including a chassisless artic tipper like that, but the only time I was really worried was with a box on a 30 ft tipping skellie, and that was because several drivers on the firm had had one over.

The problem was later discovered to be a faulty design at the base of the ram, but I once ran like a rabbit when I thought mine was going over, but it turned out to be the scudding clouds in the sky making it look as if it was going.

BTW they were certainly legal in the UK, whether they are now or not I have no idea, but the Yanks get along with them ok. The original question which caused the thread I mentioned, was from a new driver who was offered a job with one. He received multiple helpful replies mentioning all kinds of stuff such as testing the ground for level and firmness, keeping it in a straight line, and taking keen note of the strength and direction of the wind. All very sensible.

@Carryfast. That was an owner driver i cant remember his name but the caption that went with it was … with his beloved AEC. He got it there and back and it was his choice. No doubt many wouldn’t. It says more about him than anything else. The Middle East was littered with failed missions with many much newer more suitable vehicles coming unstuck and abandoned there.Maybe that was his budget and he could afford to leave it if he came unstuck. Scammells Big Js Atkis Fodens all did the same some got back some didn’t but anyone with even limited intelligence have got to admit that just completing a round trip in any of the aforementioned should be applauded. As for the ergo well , cast your mind back to 1964 i cant i wasn’t here but i do know what cabs were available at that time. Just let everyone know which British manufacturer was building suitable long distance cabs at the time. Bus engine well there’s no point even answering that one. Just get your google finger out and have a look at what was on offer at the time. When finished you can use your best mate mr hindsight and tell everyone where they went wrong

Another example of the lifting tipper (Belgian, in this case).

That Woods Atki…is that pic taken during it’s heyday, or is it a restored motor pic taken now?
Tidy motor whatever.

I would say that it is a ‘then’ picture seeing his empty pallets roped down with his sheet.
Does anybody use ropes these days?

How many people could use ropes these days?

Well, I do know one. :joy:

So do I. :innocent:

Our hero ???

Give him enough rope…

Inverness this month and this tipper still doing a weeks work and when you think of all wagon types the tipper and on off road work shows up a lot of todays motors for what they are.

There’s one working out of Stocks Blocks in Leeds or was up to very recently i think it’s a 1985.

A little off track I know but now Trump is in power in the USA pulling all the shots worldwide what do you all think would happen with the currant population if we went to war aiding Ukraine in there fight against Putin & Russia. The USA want to own Ukraine’s natural assets in return for military support, plus Trump wants to own Gaza and turn it into a mega holiday resort in yet another land grab which is exactly what Putin is trying to do and if Russia is successful they wont just stop there IMO they will invade further countries, answers on an A4 sheet, Buzzer

There is a long and busy thread on Trump in Bully’s…

I mention it, (not tell to you off, not my place) but to stop any other threads being derailed too much by politics.

More like the How Long Will they Last topic in this case.Might as well add another Starmer fan to it.

From the Isle of Man, looks like it has been shortened

Love the Vauxhall (and a rare estate at that) in the market scene, but really drawn to the barrow boy who appears to be skidding to a halt on seeing it head on.

BTW, it isn’t a Velox is it? Can’t remember, so what is it? There was another model quite different at the time. Hang on, was that a Victor and the one in the picture a Velox. Always lusted after both, but never managed ownership. In fact I tried to buy a Victor on HP but my Dad put the block on it and insisted I buy a little Austin A40, the rounded one, and distinctly un-cool.

I am fairly sure that Betty Windsor had a Vauxhall Cresta estate.
Got (or had) a photo somewhere of her driving it at Windsor.
