Yes, the first DAFs I ever saw in Britain, perhaps anywhere, and I wasn’t impressed by the exterior cab design. I might have been pleasantly surprised at the interior had I ever been in one though.

Anybody here driven one of those early models?

Parked overnight a week or so ago opposite the Oppidum routier on the old N 9 near Beziers towards Narbonne. The driver was a long haired scruffy git, belying his smart motor, with mucky old shirt and jeans and worn out trainers. Despite his more than 6 foot height when he sat in the driving seat he was barely high enough to see through the wheel. According to our mate on here ‘That driver was going for the “American trucker” style mate! In his… erm… low rider…’

I’ll bet it’s not red and green inside.
I used to deliver black oil into Wakefield Top security prison (not a pleasant experience) and the last check that they made when I’d finished and was coming out a prison officer would get on top of the tank, head and light INTO the tank to check that non of the inmates were having a few days out of the nick. Anybody who’s been on the black oil job will understand how silly it sounds for anybody to be hiding inside a tank, but still they checked. :unamused:

This was 15 minutes ago in my courtyard. A team of efficient, professional and nice Bulgarian removers who loaded some furmiture for my brother in Barcelona. The truck is a 120 E 28 Iveco Eurocargo with pneumatic suspension.

I had to chuckle at your American trucker remark  Yes it’s laughable to see them do this, air ride seats have been developed and fitted for a reason but they’d rather sit on the floor and enjoy all the bumps ha ha. I will add mitt to driving my Freightliner Cascadia with the air let out of the seat to see what it was like and it was a rough ride for my poor old body on even the slightest of rough roads.

Got this old photo the other day. It’s my dads lorry he had when he was on night trunk’s to South Wales. Driver who used to tip and reload during the day from Sandersons depot in North Yorkshire was called George Dodds and it is his two children Geoff and Susan who are stood in front.

Alf Sutton would not have stood for radiators being blanked off to improve the cab heater,he must have been on holiday!

David

In the “good old” Gardner days, I found that a sheet of cardboard, sprayed matt black, would fit nicely between the grille and the radiator. It would be reasonably water-resistant and totally invisible to the boss’s dodgy eyes!

I heard that Ackworth had been appointed as dealers for Daf, but never sold any, keeping them for their own fleet instead. Don’t know how true it was, but they were certainly well regarded at the time. Another early import close to my home (in 1966) was a forward control Magirus-Deutz tractor unit in plain blue, belonging to Birkinshaws of Darton Lane, Darton (Barnsley), and used with their low loader trailer on plant hire work. It seemed a miserable-looking thing, but was powerful and had a roomy and comfortable cab.
