From south London, weren’t they? Or am I confused again? :unamused: Love that Guy cab, I had an Invincible for a while and thought it way ahead of its time.

First one to my knowledge with a metal exterior sun visor. I gave up replacing those plastic ones on the Mercs after yet another bird broke them coming to grief. Told all the drivers 'if you want to keep your visor, avoid all birds, ‘cos you won’t get another one’

Don’t envy him that load though. All handballed by the look of it, and then he had to crawl along the top unrolling the sheets.

I think that Mays were from Elstead, Surrey, Spardo, they had a transport cafe as well.

Pete.

Not far out then, Pete, I thought they were further in towards London than that. Was it them that had some low loaders too?

And they went over the water too didn’t they ? Buzzer

DEANB:
Brown & Polson AEC Mandator from Glasgow.

Hi Dean, Further apologies for my inaccurate quote earlier this week…
This AEC Mandator was part of the fleet of Connal & Co. from 42 Craigmont Street in
Maryhill, Glasgow. The company is now Connal Highland, based in Glasgow and Inverness.
For many years, Connals carried for Brown & Polson of Paisley, makers of cornflour and
many other catering products. In the late 1960s and into the 1970s, Connals ran several
night trunk loads to Wigan, where they used the yard of Robert Baillie as a depot.

I have attached 2 pictures of G89 Volvo YGA 644J showing “Brown & Polson” and also
“Connal & Co.” on the headboard, the location is the Robert Baillie depot at Wigan.
Connals trailers were 15 ft 3ins high by Boden. Inside the trailers were fitted with a
plywood centre board, about 8 ft high, and the full length of the bodywork. They
had side loading double doors above the rear wheels, and Joloda tracks on the floor.
The overnight loads that came down from Scotland were usually glass bottles of Mazola
cooking oil on pallets for delivery to Corn Products at Trafford Park, Manchester, and
the regular return traffic was mainly new empty Mazola bottles from Rockware Glass
at St Helens or Doncaster, or Garston Bottle Co in Garston, Liverpool. Click on 2nd
picture for a better image. The pictures are by Eddie Heaton, and are on the Connals
thread that I started a while back, along with a few more.

Hi Ray, I remember seeing Connal’s pulling trailers for Brown & Polson, did they lose the contract after a while with S&H Mc Call taking over? I knew Jimmy Dixon from Carlisle who drove for them before starting his own haulage company.
