Evening all, oiltreader, MOC, thanks for your comments. The LD shown is almost certainly one of the AEC 690 powered tractors, and ridgids that are so fondly remembered by French Hauliers “of a certain vintage”! The model shown sports a later Berliet/Renault Turbo Intercooler badge, mounted no no doubt by a chauffer who wished to update the image of his camion. Yet today a Willeme 6x4 AEC 690 would be highly prized. The actual basis of the cab is the “cab over” Cottard Horizon cab. A technique that Berliet also used with their “Relax cab” structure to create the conventional GL, and TB versions.

Whil`st wading through the mud, that used to be one of my best hay fields today my thoughts turned to my old friends the Leferbvre family, and their spectacular Trans Artois Frigo fleet. What I did not mention in my previous post was that they were certainly, (apart from UKAE, the American Forces Network), the largest user of GMC Astro tractors in Europe. A vehicle that came to dominate their operation. No wonder that I could not persuade them into Saviem V8 340s!! Well I ask you, which one would a real “red blooded” driver wish to drive?

Some time ago a really good image of one of their Astro`s was on Big Lorry Blog, in the Locartois Frigo livery, on Dovers Eastern Dock, a really impressive looking outfit, (and with a 13sp Fuller, a real “goer”). I found it so, when invited for a “test drive”, one Saturday afternoon, post lunching!! Ive always loved driving any type of lorry!!! (never grown up,…never will!

Now that S20 Foden, MOC, oh Ive really happy memories of driving one of those back in the 60s. UK, France, even Italy, 4cyl Gardner box van, 38mph max, (almost), totally reliable. Europe, from an Edwardian railway carriage, and was I proud of that lorry!!

Thanks for the memories, Cheerio for now, (and it has stopped raining)!!

One of these.
Dover East around 1983

Here’s the last truck I drove. I had it for about a year from brand new to about 110000 miles. It dropped a valve at 86000 and was never quite the same after that.

Detroit supercharged V8 with Allison Automatic gearbox. Looked fantastic but a dog to drive since there was an upwards pressure on the accelerator, something to do with the auto box, and you had to keep your foot down on it all the time which explains my varicose veins!

That’s not me - that’s a driver who was makee learn with me - great guy finished up driving a White in the UK and called himself ‘Outlaw’

After its’ first trip to Izmir with the maintenance crew at Pinar Basi posing in front!

More AEC centenary.

This is interesting.
The French zip code on my photo is 62990,cannot make out where that is.
However this GMC from 62203 Boulogne has just jogged the grey matter.
I can remember unloading at this place when I was pulling for Ferryline.
It was normally a full load of salmon and then into Belgium for the frozen chips/veggies etc.etc.
In fact coming back from there towards Calais, along the old coast road, the only place were my mobile could reach the UK,this was 1987.I called Dover to quit.

This thread is well and truly in overdrive, thanks to all who participate, hey I can have a holiday for a couple of weeks, :sunglasses: so before I take off here’s a few more continentals, thanks to Martin Phippard. Martin notes that some operators specced right hand drive, this was to allow closer to wall driving on tight mountain roads.

A wee edit on the OM Wagon, forgot to mention 6 of the axles are steerable.

Evening all, MOC, 14TOO, youve come up trumps with the photos!! Both Boulogne sur Mer registered, one 9sp, one 13sp Fullers, (or 15 if you knew where to look)!! With that livery you would never expect them to be based in such a depressing area!!

1400TOO, your SAFCO fridge, it was based at Noeux les Mines, (62). code, 62203, just of the D937 south of Bethune, west of Lens. Canvin itself is north east of Lens. Aix Noulette itself being west of Lens, and south of Bethune, close to the A26. An area long associated in my memory with one of those interminable and aimless meetings, that could never reach a positive conclusion, held in the “Union Chemique et Miniere Institute”, and believe me there is nowhere in Europe more depressing!!! I was never ever, so glad to get back to my “digs” in Le Touquet, and breath real fresh air.

TAF, and the Lefebvre family had quite a following, not least for the equipment that they ran from their sites around Bethune. All the drivers seemed to adopt the "Max Meynier look, (the actor/ disc jockey, famous for his “Routiers sont sympa” RTL radio show, broadcast from RTLs studio based at Calbersons HQ in Paris), Short “bomber”, flying jacket, jeans, stylish shoes, and of course the “moustauches”. And Gentlemen, their delivery times, well,… shall we just say, they were quick!

I got to know the family well, and really enjoyed their company. It was following a very hospitable lunching that I was persuaded, (believe me I needed no persuasion)! to try out an Astro, that was fully freighted, for a quick trip. I think that it was somewhere by the Bois Bernard, on the D919, going towards Arras, that I fell in love with this screaming, hooligan of an overpowered, egotistical lorry, that adamantly refused to admit that its Fridge trailer contained anything at all, let alone 22tonnes plus of fish!!! It did not matter that I found my left arm pressed against the window, the wail of that Detroit, and the almost "motor cycle " crispness of the gearchange, …what a machine!!

That drive, the convivial company, it is a cherished memory, (and I was never ever succesfull in converting them into Saviem, or big fat Berliets,(and of course I know why)!!

Great day for British cycling today, Bradley Wiggins in Yellow on the Tour De France, and Kenyas, (GBs) Chris Froome, a stage win. I shall away to drink their health, and raise a glas of Bollinger to both them, and the family Leferbvre. Thank you for the memories, Cheerio for now.

OOPS, Old age, and eyesight, my post above, 62990 is Noeux les Mines, 62203, Boulogne sur Mer,… Sorry!! Away to the Bollinger, Cheerio for now.

I like the cab on that Hangartner Faun, that has to be the biggest cab from that era

Saviem, excellent contributions as usual, you have a way with words

Evening Mark, (or is it morning)? You have certainly got a way with Avtars!!! Had to put my spectacles on the first time I saw your new identity!! Following day the right lens fell out! obviously due to eyeball impact. Cheerio for now.

Yes it is evening here, just preparing for a relaxing evening of excessive consumption

The avatar has attracted a few comments, it came as an attachment to an unrelated email, on the attachment the cheeks do a little wiggle too. I haven’t worked out how to get the avatar to do that yet and the lack of success means I have to keep opening the attachment, so every cloud…

Looking at MOC’s pictures of the LAD cabbed Leylands, and having spent alot of time in them with my Dad in the 60’s, I always wondered what the difference was between a Comet & Super Comet?
