Here’s my pal George’s latest edition to his “fleet” he’s doubled in size!!!
Hi Gingerfold, The Leyland Cub has a ■■■■■■■■■■ County registration mark from about 1935/6, Kelso of Lazonby Fellside Transport springs to mind, they had two Cubs but it could possibly any number of ■■■■■■■■ hauliers at that time, West ■■■■■■■■■■ Farmers another strong possibility. I don’t recognise the building it must be a farm feed suppliers warehouse. The bags are marked Spillers Hull, does anyone ?
Cheers, Leyland 600
Hi Leyland 600, I believe that the Cub was owned by Henderson’s of Alston, and it is heavily loaded judging by the small gap between the mudguards and tyres. I’m not certain if the Spillers mill at Hull made animal feeds, it had closed several years before I joined Spillers in 1980. I did wonder if the Cub was delivering to a bakery and it was flour being hoisted into the flour loft? I like it as a photo with lots to see and reminisce about.
The load/security on that Clydesdale wouldn’t go down too well with today’s ministry men Pete!

Thanks for the info. Larry. I spoke to a retired former Spillers colleague last night (he was a “lifer” with them) and he confirmed that the Hull mill closed in 1977/78 as part of a drastic rationalisation to stem heavy financial losses. It ultimately led to Spillers closing its bakery division in 1978 and that resulted in Spillers being taken over by Dalgety in 1979.
Hi Gingerfold, you are probably right about the Cub ownership, yes they do look like bags of flour 10 stone ones as was usual. Looks like the the wagon has been loading in a “gey stoorie place” it seems to be covered in dust probably flour which may have got damp in a light shower and stuck, look at the windsreen and the streaky wiper arc, I bet it would take some cleaning off. I think we have all experienced situations like this one shown, I hope someone comes up with a location.
Cheers, Leyland 600

Charmouth tunnel Dorset, 2nd pic just after it was by-passed in 1990 ish,
Caps off lads to those Pickfords fellas, getting that thing through yon tunnel takes a fair bit of skill.

They’d have a job to get through now. Might need body armour. Google Charmouth Tunnel or Target Sports Centre to see why.
