Hi Oily loved the old snap of St James,s Market stick the rest on, much appreciated, regards Gordon
Finally got round to it Gordon, first pic, I can remember petrol pumps like that one, a longish wooden handled pump with a left/right action, some were crank wind. The lorry looks a '30s something Ford.
Oily

We had a Chaseside similar to that one at the quarry when I started there.
Pete.
Fred Chappell had a Chaseside when I started there as a young fella. It was a bit quiet and I got the job of taking the Chaseside to Halifax Sewage works, a few lads with TS3 Commer tippers, and I was the loader…ahem…dried human waste. Ye gods, what a job, it didn’t go down well with the then new Mrs GOM, it took a week after the job finished to get rid of the stink.
Fred was OK, he was sat in the office making invoices out.
my dad bought a Foden S80 of Fred Chappell back in 93 OCP 874P 220 ■■■■■■■ We restored it great motor.

I think that would/might have been Brian Chappell (Freds son). Brian took over when Fred died and to my mind he hasn’t developed the business. Oh, it’s still going but it just seems to be ticking over. They do fuel distribution from their Owl Lane Ossett premises and every time I pass there are always motors and trailers parked up. We were never short of work when Fred was in the saddle.

If only I could get in the cab Gordon mentioning winters, have a look at this, any of you with a memory of what they used to be like. A brilliant film, the year 1955 and freeing a goods train at Bleath Gill nr Stainmore Summit, today it would be considered the wrong type of snow , well it was, too bloody deep for todays wimps I guess. In the village I grew up in and harsh winters, we lived halfway between the main road and the main rail line, winter snow clearing was a bit o’ a thrill, ex MOD Mack snowploughs and the steam train ploughs and hardy men with shovels. youtube.com/watch?v=-ugIoMD495E
Cheers

Wonderful, Oily! All those sounds brought back the smells too. Robert
Hi Oily who remembers the caravan on Stainmoor which served as a cafe late 1950s early 60s before the present brick building was built ? There was a narrow shelf around the inside walls the widthe of a tongue and groove floorboard on which to place your cup but when the wind was blowing in true Stainmoor fashion you had to keep hold of the cup or it would shake off onto the floor plus the whole caravan felt as though it was going to take flight…
Here is a photo of the Leyland Comet I was driving in March 1963 about 2 days after Stainmoor was reopened after about 8 weeks closure due to snow. Location Stainmoor caravan cafe en route to BRS Parcels at Leeds with Quaker Oats from Whitehaven.
Cheers Leyland 600.

So come on Gerald what was the spec of that Comet (Super?) and that fly sheet looks a bit narra eh! Cheers Dennis.
Hi Dennis, No it was only a Comet with vacuum brakes, 0/375 engine, six speed box and two speed axle and it could fly, I got it up to about 82 mph over Stainmoor early one morning running empty to Selby but when loaded it would not stop so high speeds then were out of the question. New to Harrison & Ivinsons feed merchants at Caldbeck (Remember Derek Batey on TV Mr & Mrs show, he was the company bookeeper / accountant) When they packed in Bells bought the wagon and ran it for some years. Aye I agree the fly sheet was a wee bit narrow plus I was still a novice at sheeting then. There would be corner boards (both wooden and black fibreboard stuff won from BRS) under the fly sheet to protect the cartons. Great care had to taken with Quaker Oats to ensure the cartons were not damaged or wet, the BRS wallas used to take a delight in claiming that there were perhaps five or six cartons damp especially in the middle of a summer drought. They actually sweated but the BRS zbs were on a fiddle as they were supposed to be left at their depot. We all got wise to their scam and insisted on bringing them back home and sell the cartons to local grocers who accepted them gratefully rather than claim on GIT insurance. One well known ■■■■■■■■ haulier fed his family for weeks on Quaker Oats after having a number of cartons rejected from BRS at Team Valley.
Cheers, Leyland 600
