A 1940s United oldie, taken at the Middlesbrough United bus station, which was also the parcels depot, with my late brother George & the Bedford he learned to drive in.

Thanks for that, Oily. Excellent quality film for the age, although as a former owner/driver I did cringe at all that empty running!

Found this picture in a draw last night while rummaging for something else, one of the first mini’s I had one of 23 through my hands, mine is on the left the other one was my mates a 1071 cooper s. Put a set of Pirelli Cinturato’s on her and it stuck to the road like glue. Note the Reliant robin for sale in the background, Buzzer.
Hi Buzzer, if you had a Mini you’d probably be aware of an automatic gearbox version, in my early days on car delivery, late 62ish, on plates before getting a wagon I delivered one or two. they were a joy to drive, you could select D(drive) fully automatic and that was it or 1st,2nd, 3rd, 4th, up or down manually just like an normal gear box.
Rainy days were not good days for delivering minis, the floorpan of the monocoque shell leaked and sodden carpets and a boot with its share of underspray water was not uncommon, but hey BMC boffins solved this with grommets that could be taken out for drainage, not the most ingenious of solutions but working until they decided stopping the water ingress at source was the answer, another load of useless piffle but fact.

Oily got these of my face book, Pearce’s bakery in Carp st Beca New South Wales, Australia . Old and new the Ford bought in 1947, Buzzer.
Hi Robert, no doubt you came across Willi Betz wagons during your journeys abroad, seems to favour Merc, remarkably he started the firm aged just 17 in 1945.

I’m old enough Buzzer to remember the horse and cart delivery of bread and groceries in rural Aberdeeshire, also the fishwife, Fish Bell her name was, she’d get off the train with two large basketfuls of fish, having travelled some twenty odd miles from the coast, round the village and farms until she’d sold everything, then came the Ford 10 van of the same family, Findlay of Whitehills,(coastal fishing town) Banffshire.

Was the Triumph in Lanchester? I recall my mates Dad had one ready to restore and that looks very much like their house and the car!

Thanks Oily! He had stakes in Mercedes I believe . He was certainly one of their biggest customers. What frustrated me was MB wouldn’t sell the public any SK without the dreaded and horrible EPS gearshift
, yet Betz had hundreds of the damned things with manual ZF Ecosplits because he refused to have EPS. Makes you spit!

I have only experienced life in two SK Mercedes , one , a 2033 with a 16 speed ZF and one with a ESP box and I know which one I preferred!
