Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

Buzzer:
Brand new I think but nice, Is it a Mammoth (what) . Once owned a AEC Mammoth Minor tractor unit but had it on round timber and took the second axle out which made it long wheel base but at least it had off road traction to a point and not a seesaw, Buzzer.

Hi servo88, Smiles just hauled for them, Braithwates were taken over by Tilling Construction Services, The 3 tippers were then painted in the Smiles livery yhe same as these Mammoth ridgids, Regards Larry.

I remember Witton, I used to load there sometimes & there was a bloke used to watch you over the railway line in & out I used to deliver to Tilcons at Sunderland with a Dodge BJR 310 B, Smiles had about 10 of them at this time, The good old days IMO, Regards Larry.

Time to go ! Buzzer.

Cant see any wheels in that work shop Oily but I bet there are some in there, but interesting picture of Ross Rigby hammers being operated by girls in the 1st WW and the men moving the metal being beaten, cheers Buzzer.

We had 3 of those at Hargreaves and in my eyes they were one of the finest motors ever built. I only ever got the occasional week with one because the were one driver allocated things but I’ve never forgotten them,…1964.
happy days.

And I wish Mr Dunbar would stop posting pictures of multiple Mk V’s because they cause me to have a …ahem…“crisis”
And you…Mr Leyland600,…that Pollock AEC Marshal. 1961  I’ve had to have 30 minutes in a darkened room to recover, put a tipper body on it, paint it in Fred Chappells colours, and it was my 5177 WY
For a week with an old AEC, old style log book/sheet, I’d go back tomorrow, I’d mount up somehow and I would force my arthritic bones to work.

Thanks to Buzzer, lurpak, Leyland600 , servo88, Lawrence Dunbar and kevmac47 for a fine input of stuff

Hi Buzzer, no wheels here either but from the same era and region, steam boiler leak testing I’m guessing, air bubble checker  with a precarious perch

Thank You for reply Oily, Cheer’s Pete

Hi Oily I wondered if there was a connection with A,C. Penman’s at Heathall, Dumfries but you have answered my question. Whit aboot elf n safety that guy might fae in the Clyde then there wid be a awfu stushie !! Nae doot he has done that job time and again. Do you notice the odd looking angular structure across the river, that is a cross river ferry I can’t remember the details but remember seeing an illustration of it (I think there were two) in a book I read a couple of years ago about the River Clyde.
Cheers. Leyland 600.

Hi GOM I shudder to think what state you would be in if that Pollock Marshal photo had been in colour, would it be the smelling salts or a large glass of malt. I must agree it does look a fine motor I always fancied one but ended up with an ERF si wheeler.
Buzzer and his hearse. Vehicle transport to the North Isles of Orkney (Westray, Sanday, Stronsay , Eday and North Ronaldsay) by three ferrys, Earl Sigurd, Earl Thorfinn and Varagen from the Orkney Mainland at Kirkwall is an epensive business and usually charged by vehicle length with a special rate for vehicles under 5.5 metres, consquently the north isles based hauliers are dab hands at adopting wagons and trailers that manage to keep within this limit but carry a very good load into the bargain. Here are a few examples waiting on Kirkwall Pier. Usually the isles hauliers employ a shunter in Kirkwall who will tip and load two or three motors per day and get them back to the pier for the afternoon ferries. After loading on the ferry they travel unacompanied. The owner shunts on his home isle, I wonder who will shunt this North Isles Orkneyman or woman on his / her last journey.

Sorry GOM, Heres another one just to keep your your memory alive,   Then have a large Malt , Regards Larry.

There are others on this thread for whom those fabulous AECs hold a fascination, Larry. I think we had better start an orderly queue for those idiots who wish to put themselves forward for a drive, should one become available. With myself and GOM at the front, of course.

The AEC,s I,ll be up for it … I loved my Mandator AV690 ran like a bird …only problem was I used to catch the arse of my bib and brace overalls on the ratchet hand brake …these were the days !!!
