I was struggling to with-hold a comment about that, Dave, but seeing as youâve mentioned it, that would have been a hanging offence when I was a lad! Or at least a crack across my left knee with the cab brush!

Thank youâŚhappy days. AECâsâŚfor real men
I know you canât (and shouldnât) stop progress, but Iâll take a 50/60/70âs motor against all the modern Euro motors. A driver needs to âfeelâ a motor, the modern ones with air sprung cabs, auto boxes, etc, etc, just donât do it for me.
Note the mechanical air pressure indicator just below the speedoâŚSTOP.
Re the foot on the clutch. It was a hanging offence when I wor a lad. Only last weekend I had to have stern words with my ânewly qualified driverâ granddaughter. She past her test first, time, bought a little car and insured it and he granddad has left her in no doubt that she must NOT, EVER, rest her foot on the clutch pedal.
Mr cav551 posted a Youtube clip earlier âA nice selectionâ. I thought it was a fabulous 6 minutes. I urge you all to have a look at proper lorry driving.
Hi Oily, that is a fabulous You Tube clip of Steve Mayleâs AEC Mandator, pity about the foot on the clutch as others have commented.I sold Steve a CAV U6 starter for this wagon about 2 years ago.
Cheers, Leyland 600.

The open road, a beautiful day, an able machine, an engine thatâs singing a tune, what more could a man with diesel in his veins wish for

donât suppose youâll have a spare clutch in stock ? lol
This is really worth a watch, itâs an Australian ABC TV programme, namely Four Corners dealing in current affairs and investigative journalism into malpractice, this particular episode is dealing with the pressure on OZ truckers by number crunchers to take unbelievable risks. It lasts 45 mins, stick with it, if only for the profound statement near the end and offered by the widow of a young husband/motorist killed by a fatigued truck driver.

Ah, memories.
In the late 50âs I managed to break a halfshaft on one of those little Austins in Darlington, 2;30pm, Sunday afternoon. No boy racer stuff, waiting at the traffic lights, eased the clutch, it never moved. Hmn. the soon to be Mrs GOM chirps âwhy are you swearing my loveâ?
A bit of head scratching, a couple of phone calls and an old guy (garage owner) turned out and sheer luck, he had an old halfshaft that fit. Home in Dewsbury by 20:00hrs. Whew.
Kev mentions the Ford Consul, I rented one of those to go on honeymoon, June 1960.
3 speed column gearchange, bench seats front and back.

Oily, the Foden is owned by John Gornall, he restored it over a number of years. He ran his own haulage company for many years, before retiring. Regards Kev.
