Hi Oily, those must be your ancestors depicted in the demonstration tableux at Glenfiddoch visitor centre showing a guy with lanky hair and a beard to match sitting ahint a dyke with a tam o shanter on his heid and a with a copper vessel with a lang piece of coiled copper pipe attached all being heated on a camp fire, this guy is catching the drops of moisture dripping from the end of the pipe into a mug. Was this the inspiration for Robert Burns song " The Deil’s awa wi the excise man, keep the smoke from rising Barney "Cheers hic ! Leyland 600.
Might have been G, they were in that area from early 1900s onwards. On my dad’s annual holiday we would cycle the 20 odd mile from where we lived to visit his two brothers and various extended family, I was pre teens and on my mums bike and even with seat down a full pedal circuit wasn’t possible, so with what seem endless bloody hills the elbows were above the shoulders for a lot of the way, the luxury of being seated going down hill was short lived as pedal power had to be built up for the next brae, one or two stops along the way at cold water springs for a thirst quencher, this with a cupped hand, also getting the thermos and spam sandwiches out of the ex army kitbag my dad used daily for his work piece. In the evening sitting by the fireside hearing the tales of their not quite legal larder filling escapades, I could expand, but hey better get back lorries albeit still with whisky and The Bowmore.

Have posted this one before but while we are on the subject, another look at a fine example.

Hi Oily, apologies for the family description I though they were residents way back in the 1750 plus not 1900 but hey ho they were still out to have drink on the fly. I was once delivering concrete kerbs to the Diageo plant near Bridge of Allan when I was asked if I wanted my thermos flask filled with whisky from copper tubes the workmen had down the inside of the overall legs hanging by a stout wire hook. However the gaffer came along and the exercise was abandoned.
Back to wagons, I know Frank that owns this Johnnie Walker ( he is not a relation of mine unfortunately) Holmalloy cabbed Albion Victor bus chassis its not a Chieftain as many will argue.
Cheers. Leyland 600
Hey Oily if that picture was the Grants Glenfiddich distillery I took a few loads of coal in there while with Elgin Tpt and carted a few loads down top Menstrie from all round Speyside great days must have picked up at nearly every still in them days
Buzzer:
1Here are a couple of pictures from our local evening newspaper and shows the Pirelli factory in Southampton on Western Esplanade now covered in retail shops including Ikea.
The factory was built here as it was in close to the docks for ease of shipment of incoming raw materials and export of the finished goods, the shots shows the work force of woman as this was in the Great war in 1920, Pirelli lasted nearly 100 years and closed about 25 years ago, Buzzer.
Does anybody remember when ladies removed their hats when they were out to tea.Perhaps the Beehive era

Hi backsplice, had a rake to see if I could find any photos from your time in that area, a lot of Baillie Bros of course, but a rarish one here thanks to my late friend Ronnie Cameron.
Cheers
Oily
I wonder if anyone on here would like one of these two new Merc Actros motors or if you know you’re getting one could it be one of these two.
Thanks to Buzzer for his Pirelli photo, no thought of the Calendar Girls then eh and rastone brings up the subject of hats, well a bit of useless info which I’m sure everyone knows already. The Luton style van body was invented for the carriage of hats, an excerpt here from Wikipedia
A Luton body is a style of commercial vehicle body incorporating an enclosed box body extended over the cab. It takes its name from the town of Luton, in Bedfordshire, where the Bedford commercial vehicle plant was located.
This style of body was designed to accommodate the high volume low weight loads of straw hats which were part of Luton’s industry. Straw hats were wrapped in hessian in long cylinders to fit across the width of the van. It was incidental that it was the home of Bedford although all the early Luton vans were on Bedford chassis.
An early example here thanks to Les Chatfield.
Oily
Thanks to Stanfield, servo88 and coca cola kid for the pics
That Skeldon XF Space Cab livestock wagon servo looks the biz, of all the cab styles and IMHO Daf is as good as it gets, tho’ like my dad used to say “clothes do not maketh the man” and no doubt the same will apply to wagons.
