Re. your comments about improvisation.
C P Marshall’s ran short of improvisation with one of his trucks in the late 60’s, the starter motor failed on an old Atkinson and he couldn’t improvise one so he ran it without one fitted —for 3 months. Allegedly drivers were under orders not to stop it. Mind you Marshalls ran a lot of their trucks day and night so it probably didn’t make a lot of difference!!

Hi Bassman,
Good job fuel was cheaper in those days then  . I bet no drivers had ever been so scared of stalling a wagon at the lights  . Cheers

Cheers to TIDDERSON and Gardner 120 for the pics

and the Leyland Octupus in TIDDERSON’S first pic, I wonder could this be the same wagon, your pic looks like the Octupus is on trade plates, this LMS wagon KT reg to me would be Kent, and like your pic, “elf and safety” yet to materialise. not even steel toecaps
Oily

Still on the “elf and safety” theme and grateful to the National Railway Museum for sharing images within the terms of Creative Commons licence.

Some more “hands on” loading, starting with the loading of an 1926 Overland lorry at Holyhead on its way to Dublin.

Isn’t that just the time when you would stall a motor. I have memories of bringing a truck back home from Brum after the batteries failed, rush hour across Brum A38 Derby through Doncaster the old A18 to Scunthorpe . Never was the road and traffic conditions so carefully monitored, but was there any thanks!! See you in the morning driver.
Was they the good old days ? Well I carried on driving for another 40 odd years so I suppose they were.
Cheers Bassman
