Used to see them all over the place some years back.
I tipped there once, and once was enough, a load of apples from Hull docks I think, all handball obviously. Not sure if it was Reece’s though. I was told to be there at 3am or some such ungodly hour and booked into those digs on Leman St… Up early and parked outside there was nobody there. Not at 3, or 4 or even 5am. Someone told me they are never there till 8. I couldn’t even go back to sleep, had to keep shifting back and forth to let other artics past.
At 8 they arrived on the dot and brewed me a cup, but didn’t seem all that keen on tipping me. Then suddenly at 9 it was all go, hurry up drive get them apples off. No time to fold the sheet just stripping it forward bit by bit. Never mind at least we were moving, should be tipped by 11, or even 10 if I’m lucky.
After a dozen boxes everything stopped and they all went back to shifting other stuff and serving customers. Eventually I clicked, after another short rush rush episode, the buggers were using me as a market stall and only tipping what they were selling. I was very glad to get away from that place, and even gladder I never went there again.
Never did markets again till I got here to Gauthiers, hated those Parisian ones but I did once do Covent Garden. What a change, they treated me like a god, nothing was too much trouble. Other places in England were the same, they all seemed to give special treatment to us ‘foreigners’.
Thanks to Ray Smyth and Suedehead for the photos

Nice driving, spacious car. I particularly liked the Wolseley automatic version. The car shown is a comparatively rare Morris. Most were Austins.

They were all ‘land-crabs’ for good reason
