Ray Smyth:
Old Haymarket, Liverpool, 1964. The J2 van on the left will be heading toward the start of the A59, Byrom Street.
The TK Bedford is approaching the entrance to the Mersey Tunnel which is immediately beyond the left arm of the
Point Duty Policeman. The road on the left is Whitechapel, the road behind the Ford and Rover cars is Victoria Street,
and the road away to the right is Manchester Street, Picture from Bootle History Forum.
Ray.
The pedant within is urging to say the J2 is actually a J4…
Congratulations to the Pedant for resisting the urge.
I don’t look back with fondness at loads like that on the ERF, they look nice and neat and tidy, but what I always remember is the blood, sweat and tears it took to load and tip them, often alone with only a fast moving belt for company.
But I did love my Big J that I drove for Rodney Closs. That was a beauty and I even had curtains made to measure for it and colour coded with Rod’s turquoise livery.
I was even paid to leave them in when he leased it out from under me to a start-up haulier in Kent.
This picture shows Hope Street in Liverpool in 1964. At the far end is The Roman Catholic Cathedral under construction.
At the other end of Hope Street behind the camera man is The Anglican Cathedral built from large sandstone blocks from
Woolton Quarry at the south end of Liverpool at the early part of the 20th century.
