Vesty’s had the only two of these trucks, Jacky and Julie. One is preserved in The Transport Hall of Fame.

Vesty’s (Lord Vesty) was a very big outfit globally, incorporating not just the cattle stations in Australia but also Blue Funnel line steamers, refrigerated ships bring meat from S. America, and UCC (Union Cartage) delivering it from London to their wholesale company, Weddels, who I worked for in both Nottingham and Bedford before my driving days in around 1960. I think they also had a retail chain, possibly Dewhursts, but not sure about that.

Anyone into camping? Need a generator?

Did three of these, back to back, Brisbane to Melbourne and return empty.
I bought a Range Rover in Melbourne so asked if I could bring home on the truck. Not only was I given permission, but the man organised for me to use a drop deck with ramps, so I didn’t have to find a loading ramp. Can’t ask for more than that.

Way back in those pre sleeper cab days I left my Atki one Friday afternoon at Lymm Servcies on the M6. Mum and Dad were living and working in Japan at the time and he had asked my brother and I to give his brand new Capri a run out every now and then (he ordered it before he got the job and was too late to cancel).
So Saturday morning we motored up to fetch the empty wagon back. John followed me round several local garages till we found one with enough room to back the trailer up to the lift. Loaded and secured and straight back to Midlands Storage where the MD saw us unloading it on the dock. He thought it was a dodgy load and was not pleased as it would have cancelled the insurance but, once explained and assured that I was not booking the NO on expenses, he gave us his blessing. ‘Just make sure you ask next time though’ he said with a wink.
They aren’t all nasty people.

Another case was when I was working for Shaw’s who had just been taken over by Charlie Dormer in Leytonstone. He had me working the whole week on his Calor Gas contract from East London, living in local digs. but allowed me to bring my 1939 Packard down on the empty trailer one time so that I had a runabout during the week, and he saved finding me a load back to Nottingham on Fridays.

Yes it was Dewhursts and all part of a way of shifting money globally and avoiding taxes.

Some great photos Buzzer a coupleple I hadn’t seen before .
As me learned friend says Jacky and July both reside at the Hall of fame Jacky has been cannibalised to help in Julys restoration and it was hoped that one day Jacky would be back to her glory but the last time I saw it was at Ruby Plains station parked in the bush waiting for a ride to the Hall of Fame it looks like a pretty large project.

There’s been mention of the Atkinson Guardsman previously on the site, it had the V8 ■■■■■■■ engine so presume the floor was lower. It wasn’t a success as nearly all big users of Atkinson vehicles preferred the look of the external radiator, split screen cab and the Guardsman didn’t attract them, probably why the dated look of the Atkinson Borderer, Defender etc lasted so long. Someone may know if they built/sold more than the Bulwark example but I don’t recall seeing any pics of others. Franky.

Jacques from Watford also ran a Guardsman, although it had a Rotherham (ET) registration on it
