Past Present and in Between in Pictures (Part 1)

Sayers must have had one of the smartest fleets in the country.

That Joseph Hoyle Foden sheeting is terrible, and it looks as though the load is paper too,and it’s been raining, perhaps the driver unsheated ready to unload when it started to rain,so he just chucked a sheet over quickly.

Something else about it too, David. Is it an ex Richard Johnson & Nephew vehicle? Pretty poor signwriting with it seeming to be removing itself.

Altogether rather scruffy (smashed fog light etc), maybe it is an internal vehicle perhaps?

Thanks to Buzzer and DEANB for the photos

The car transporter looks like a White 4000 and if the sign writing says Gulf transport which was /is a Territory company its possibly Adelaide to Darwin.as I think the Holden car factory was in SA

The Albion could be heading across the Nullabor I see it has long range fuel tank behind the cab and a few extra spares on the carrier on top of the load not sure about the white goods though more like slightly dusty goods and definitely not perishables.

Some old cattle trucks, Buzzer

Great set of pics Buzzer. Takes me right back to when I was knee high and going with our cattle wagons around the marts during school holidays.

The same line up of wagons would probably seen anywhere (just different names on the doors) with wood cattle boxes, some painted painted, some varnished, some even with a top deck on the roof!!!
A different world compared to todays sleek alloy containers with lifting decks, electrically operated back doors etc.

Thanks for posting

Heres a bit more about the Foden Transfleet pic from 1977.

The snow scene is post 1973 as the registration of the Capri is M. Still nice to see a bit of snow

April 2008 on the M62, can remember watching a Fred Dibnah programme and him having to get some sort of permission to cross Scammonden Bridge with traction engine and hut.

When the drought was on back in the 90’s we were running tarmac up to Scammonden Dam to make an apron for tankers to park and discharge water into the dam, I think they brought it from the eastern counties and tacho’s and driving hours for the tanker driver’s all went out of the window until the dam was replenished!

Pete.

HUT ■■ HUT?? :unamused: :unamused:
Have a care sir with scurrilous remarks like that, it was a ‘travelling van’, that’s where the engine crew lived, ate their meals, and slept. No sleeper cabs on a traction engine. That HUT :unamused: was their home…

I remember that Pete, and I remember thinking that if an overtired driver fell asleep and killed someone on the road, would the victim’s family have a case against the government, or who?

My lad did a bit of tanker driving on the water job, a lot of drivers earned a lot of money. IIRC my lad was running from Keilder to Scammonden…

  I can remember the threshing mill contractors going round the farms with traction engine, mill and travelling van with a couple of pushbikes on the back of the van for nipping to the nearest hostelry or even home for the night.

Yes you are correct David,I can just see RJN signage on the cab roof, reviewing my comments,I think you are probably correct, the Foden being internal only, otherwise I think the condition would cause it to be pulled!

Stay safe,

David
