Back in the '80s we spent a lot of Bank Holiday weekends at Blackmore Caravan Park nr Hanley Swan and the road between Broadway and Evesham was something else for orchard stalls either side of the road fruit and veg in abundance, unbeatable Victoria plums, last time I went along there early 2000s there was only one at the Evesham bypass end. Going back beyond the 1980s I remember the main carter from the Vale to the London markets being Marshalls of Evesham.
A couple of Evesham wagons.

A new Anderson shelter being delivered to a house in Sunderland. I am told the unit is a Karrier Cob, which is a new one to me but no doubt someone on here will know about them.

This surely refers to a lot of you on here, chairs Buzzer.

Yes, definately a Cob. Probably railway owned as they had plenty of them.

Pete.

Note that the man standing by the solid-looking gate and carrying the sheet appears to ne in what might be a railway uniform. Perhaps the railways were distributing shelters.

Yes, the railways did do most of the distribution of them as they usually arrived by rail. The GWR alone delivered hundreds of them, I have some pics somewhere.

Hi Tyneside, The little artic is a " Scammell Mechanical Horse " from the 1930s. The L.N.E,R in your area would
have had a large number of these, some with flat trailers, and some with covered van trailers. The Scammell
in these pictures with a Bristol number plate would have been new to the " Great Western Railway ". NMPs.

Cheers, Ray.

Scammell.jpg

Ray Smyth wroye; Hi Tyneside, The little artic is a " Scammell Mechanical Horse " from the 1930s.

I would think the wartime photo is of the Karrier Cob as already stated, although there are slight differences in both companies models of their ‘Mechanical Horse’ over the years of production, the sharper front end and the exhaust silencer running along the lower nearside chassis tends to point to a Cob. Although the Scammell three wheeler is often thought of as the leading design, Karrier produced their Cob some three years earlier than the Scammell in 1930. The LMSR (London Midland Scottish Railway) and Karrier cooperated to produce the Cob as a derivative of the Colt three wheel dustcart commissioned by Huddersfield Corporation as below. Like the Scammell the Karrier vehicles were also used by the then main rail companies although again it tends to be the Scammell that often hogs the limelight. As for the LNER delivering the shelter material, back then it would have been quite normal for rail companies to deliver goods door to door from their Goods yards. The early Cob used Karriers auto coupling and the trailers could be seen with the landing wheels on the outside of the tractor rear wheels, however for conformity in rail use the Scammell coupling could be fitted. Franky.

Just noticed I hadn’t added the Karrier Colt pic. Franky.

Discussions on the GUY 8LXB thread about United Transport reminded me of another company that was taken over by them, Arch Brechin of Glasgow. Couple of pics below from the 60’s and 70’s. Thought I’d put them in here rather than resurrecting the Brechin’s thread.
