The eight legger ‘Spanish Dodges’ that Tommy Wards ran in the Peak District certainly went very well, I think they were rather unreliable though?
Pete.

Never had the chance to drive one myself but recall they were not the most reliable of lorries.
The marque seemed short lived and cant remember any of the companies that run big fleets having many of them.

Hazel Croft ran one for a short time , normal power steering on the front axle , second axle was a separate pump driven by a belt off the prop shaft . When shunting in a yard it was like a 60s Foden . It went back where it came from and the chap deliberately tipped it loaded On a slope to write it off for the insurance

WHAT? Less than a grand a day? I don’t know why you bother, mate, especially with the price of fuel these days. If I were you I’d look around for a proper job, but no doubt your accountant will be giving you similar advice at year’s end. I always said you were on a loser, running those ancient motors. Why didn’t you listen to your mate, Bewick when he was telling you that Gardners were the only way to go?

Good money for a skateboard Dan, if my Foden had been earning even half of that weekly back then (and it never got anywhere close to it!) Frank Gough would have been able to afford a nice new boiler suit for himself and I would have been on £500+!

The 38 tonne rated tractor unit was 270 bhp but I don’t know what was in the eight leggers? I know they ■■■■■■ all over my Gardner 201 engined Sed Ak 400 on banks!

The left hand one in the top picture seems to have a slightly extended cab. Was it a drop down couchette?
Can’t remember if I ever saw a proper sleeper, were there any?
Spanish Dodges were ones of the very few lorries that I had exactly nothing to do with in my career.

I’m sure I remember the Spaniards at Covent Garden in the late 60’s early 70’s with Maggies, or is my memory having a go at me.

In France, they were powered by Rolls-Royce engines.

I wonder who made the 270 hp engine, Chrysler again maybe? Commercial motor announced it in 1973 as a 38 tonner but that does seem a low powered unit for that weight?
Pete.

The 270 was the Chrysler. Most early 38-tonne traffic was around that power:weight ratio IIRC.
