Hi Spardo, The buses went in the late 50s, The Selside Cafe went in the late 60s IIRC, Take care and stay safe, Regards Larry.
Thanks mate, doing my best, that explains part of it, I started driving in '63 so am surprised I don’t remember the Selside, perhaps it was misty when I crawled past.
Leyland600:
Oily here are images of the same vehicles on Helmsdale harbour wall taken in June 2017 when en route to Orkney plus the Renault timber wagon on the riverside opposite Rapsons garage,
Cheers, Leyland 600.
Thanks for the pics G, I’ve called past a time or two and the craic with Tommy Rapson always interesting, the chap on the phone in pic, couldna get much out o’ him.
Cheers
Oily
Just found a photo of the Renault when it was new at Truckness 2016.
Leyland600:
These were the two old buses that formed the cafe on Shap summit.
Spot on IIRC It was called the Eagle or somthing like that, When the old buses went IIRC The new cafe was called the Selside which was a bit further up Sharp on the left, There was a phone box there too, It was a Green coloured building, The last time I went over Shap some 20 odd years ago The concrete base where The Selside Cafe stood was still there covered with algie,I have spent many cold nights while running from Manchester to Rutherglen in the 50s, Driving wagons with no heaters in, Like this 1955 Atki & Drag, But Im still here now in 80s Plus I enjoyed every minute of it, Regards Larry.

Hi Rigsby the Durness route is a different Rapson (George I believe) with buses based in Tain plus there was another Rapson firm based at Brora for many years and covering lots school services up to Thurso but they have now gone. last year when I was up there the Rapson haulage business appeared to have closed down after 55 plus years that I have been aware of the company and seen their wagons coming south through Carlisle back in the early 1960s. They are possibly all part of the original family but too complicated to fathom out. Oily may have more detailed information living in the nearby area.
Cheers, Leyland 600.
This location is the centre of Pemberton, a district of Wigan on the A577. To the right
of the pictures, just half a mile away is Junction 26 of the M6, and the start of the M58.
Smiths of Matlock have at least two of those old Leylands but they haven’t shown them for many years now. They have/had an LDV 200 van in immaculate condition as well, like Matlock Transport I think they have also finished trading now which is a shame. They were another company I applied to for a driving job as they treated their drivers very well, however nobody was due to die so I didn’t get set on! All the driver did was drive, the two Smith brothers refuelled them ready for the next day as well as cleaning them and they also fired the engines up so the truck was all warmed up for the driver when he arrived. A couple of the drivers had over forty years with them, not on the Leyland in the pic though!
A now sadly deceased OD at Ballidon quarry had one of those TL Bedford six wheelers from new on a C plate and it did him good service after he fitted an extra crossmember from (I think?) a Leyland to support the gearbox rear. He later sold it to another OD and then bought an AWD six wheeler which he ran until retirement.

Thanks to DEANB, Ray Smyth, Lawrence Dunbar, Leyland600 and Buzzer for the pics.
You like your Volvos Buzzer credit to Peter Schöler for the photos.
Oily
Oily think you may be right about the Volvo’s as I have owned a few in my time that’s for sure, but have bought Scania’s & DAF’s along the way as well, Buzzer.
Are Waters, from Darley Dale still going? Used to see a lot of them early in my haulage career because we often loaded out of Matlock with asphalt blocks.

Yes they have two (or maybe even three if they still have one near Telford?) yards now.

A thought occurs to me, seeing all these wonderful wagons pictured in these pages these days, have high roof cabs now become standard and flat roof ones, the options?
Or is it simply that because they are more photogenic they attract more attention from shutter clickers? The exceptions of course are the ‘historic’ pictures such as Buzzer’s 2 Volvos above.

Nothing excites more when out shutter clickering Spardo than one like this still doing a days work at Dingwall a month or so ago.
