Pakistan's Karakoram Highway

Dutch Rynart Fiats doing Pakistan. Robert

Those FIATS are Italian-Italians. They got the Italian Commercial Vehicle flash on the bumper. :unamused:
Ooops just seen your comment ,H.

hutpik:
Hi Robert. Not to appear to be nitpicking as i have the greatest admiration for both the photos and travels that you post. But,the two trucks are Italian, not Rynart as Rynart Transport were green and cream and Rynart Trucking were blue with a red and white band.
As my colleague mentions i also think the ERF was Johnny Williams. If my memory is not too fuddled i think it was about 1971-2.Mike

Whoops, yes I think you are right. I should know better as I was actually living in Rome when I bought the book with these pictures in it! Silly me and thanks for the correction, as we should get this stuff right for posterity! Now HERE (below) is a pic of the Rynart lads head across Tahir for Pakistan. Bless ya. Robert

That ERF in Pakistan - no aircon,no power steering and a 180 hp lump. Gluttons for punishment drove them on TIR. I had one on UK work. Took my girlfriend on a trip on a summers day. Started in Essex ,got to Hertfordshire and she got out and hitched back to London ,too hot ,too noisy and too claustrophobic !

There’s a video going about Rotta Karachi with 3 of Rynart Fiats going to Pakistan, it was made by Cine Fiat in the 70’s. The drivers in that movie are Dutch but driving Italian Fiat 619’s in the blue and white Rynart colours.

Jeff…

I remember seeing that on Toprun?

My old FIAT towing a Skania & trailer all of them fully frieghted to Calais. Prob with the FIAT -NO emergency brakes ,when the air ran out you just rolled. It had a transmission handbrake! :unamused:

Has that drag got turn table steering on the rear, I haven’t seen one with the second axle so far forward for a long time.

Robert did you reverse the photo of the Fiats ? if not why are they right hand drive. I know some of the older Fiats and OM’s form the south of Italy were right hand dive as it was easier to see the edge of narrow mountain roads, but I can’t see the advantage of using then to run to Pakistan.

That one in the pic was R/H. It was so the Italians could see the edge of the mountain roads before autostradas.

That trailer had front & rear steering, the centre axle was rigid, & a lever on the front that operated an air powered locking system for reversing. It also had a detachable Aframe that fitted the rear axle in case you wanted to shunt it about & thats what the Scanny is attached to. Trouble was,I was RHD & Tony was LHD & no CBs. I lugged that from outside Macon to Calais .We hit Blvd Peripherique at rush hour! :unamused:
The other thing with that rig was that it was Milan reg.but the workshop in London had put on the Long Vic signs so when you aproached M.Blanc direction France the carabinieri road patrol would let you pass but when they saw those signs they would roar after me & nick me for being a solo driver!

They drive on the left in Pakistan, like UK - maybe that was the reason. It is far more likely that they were RHD Italians, like so many were in those days for the reasons you gave. Robert

Jock Hastie I did a couple trips for Kingsley there was a big geezer from McCellar on there that I didn’t get on with so I left

Doin this on an iPod

Macon to Calais on the old road, 5 feet behind the truck in front, I don’t fancy that very much. We towed on e of our Scanias from Bishkek to Almaty on a straight bar 800k’s, there were 3 of use, so we all took turns at towing, being towed, and driving the free truck.
I used to do quite a few regional collections round apple orchards in the Trento Bolzano Cortina area and marble round Canna in the south, I would have preferred to be in a left ■■■■■■ so I wouldn’t have been so close to the edge. A Bit of chewing the seat going on, on those roads.

Poor old Tony ,in the pic, was a physical wreck by the time we got to Peronne . It was Blv. P that did him in. It was five in the evening and the Kamikaze bombing in from the righthand slip roads were blindly getting behind me and expecting Tony to give way
The original plan was to tow him to Calais on a bar with just the truck and then I go back to Macon to collect my trailer but when I in unclipped that Aframe from under the trailer ,job done!

His engine was running but his transmission was shot, gearbox ,I think?

yes mate i remember the big jag .bob was married to my mums sister Pat and they had nine children in a big house in canning town.bob passed away 6/7 years ago.anyone on here who knew him always respected him for his skill and knowlege

Bob was a good man. He bought two jags and tried to cobble them together to make a good 'un. I spoke to Tony the other driver who sold him an Inspector Morse jag and he told me that Bob didn’t have any luck with the motors.

Re;Bob Wright. When we (Bob) did that repair in France I drove - LHD 3Axle Scanie artic - to UK more or less non-stop.We reached the aproach to the Blackwall Tunnel at dawn .The sensor started flashing for over height,Bob said’Keep going its only the topsheet flapping!’ He was desperate to get home so I carried on.We got thru to the exit & standing in the middle of the road was a beagle .who opened the drivers -Bobs-door & gave him a proper coating! Bob kept saying ‘I’m not driving,I’m not driving!’ The beagle gave him full verse & chapter then slammed the door.I laughed all the way to Island Row!
