I would not of liked to do my drop at the Whitgift Centre in a ZF auto. That place is tight as hell and it’s pretty tough using an ishift! Even then my ishift jumps about a bit when empty.
Thanks for replies.
I hope the very prominent member of this forum who I will not name and who had argument with me about this issue read this…
I have driven 08, 12 and 14 plate MAN rigids and worked in company that had fleet of MANs only, and I and most of drivers in that company agreed to this:
the nodding donkey:
Nothing…Nothing…
WHOA…
Duck…
(Come on drive…loads of room…)
Nothing…
Nothing…
Whoa… Duck…
(Christ… we had some [zb] drivers here, but this one is really [zb])
So hope you’re reading this “Mr Always right, Prominent very TruckNetUk member” either you are not always right or not only me but many other drivers are i…
The main issue is likely to be the quality of the throttle pedal and how smooth it signal is…Volvo probably do their own pedal to go with the gearbox so everything is matched perfectly …Where M.A.N ,IVECO and DAF ,do not do their own box ,and ZF will programme in the customers software /parameters…I found o early AS-TRONIC boxes that if the clutch release arm as tight it was all or nothing ,so the clutch release on the ZF has to be free,to get the smooth take up of drive …As for quicker shifting especially when coming to a halt at a roundabout but then having to accelerate before stopping ,is another uestion
For it to change gear it has to talk to the engine to see how much torque it is generating ,at the same time it has a natter with the EBS to see how fast/ slow the wheels are going …It will then get out the abacus ,which then works out which gear to select,by this tie you have peformed an emergency stop, and it all starts again

So these boots may not be helping?
But seriously, I drive in safety shoes, and as I’m in and out the cab,
I’m not sure i can get away with wearing trainers…Them boots are fine dude, and just as soon as I get my Slade tribute band up and running I’ll be knocking on your door.

Which one of us gets the dodgy fringe?
Radar & Caveman, I tried the turtle/crawler reverse today, and for 90% of the reversing I do it’s probably preferable…
The bill for the damage should also be lower!
But I had a right little moment today on one of my drops to a new build of about 4 houses. It was up a tiny little lane in Hedge End called Pyland’s lane, and I knew i was in for some fun the moment the road narrows to a single track road. My drop was a few hundred metre’s further on, and was too tight for me to turn into the site going forward. And even if I had managed that, the only turning spot was at the top in a pond of mud, churned up by the site fork lifts. So I had to drive past, and try and reverse up it, and initially this didn’t go well! I managed to just about swing the back of the truck up the start of the drive, but my nearside drive wheels hit a hollow and I couldn’t get past it, it just spun out. But I’m thankful for the crawler reverse, as I looked a big enough nob doing this without the truck jumping about every time I tried to move! The problem was that the rear steer axle was taking the weight and not the drive wheels, thus no traction. So as well as using the reverse crawler, I lifted the rear stear axle and managed to get enough traction to get past hollow and back up the hill to the site. And to top it off, I even used the suspension control to lower the arse a bit to make it easier to pull the pallets out on to the tali lift. Not that it made a great deal of difference on a hill that steep!
So I’ve put some of my new found knowledge to good use, and didn’t have to call the office and scream: HELP!!!
Thanks people!

Pleased to be of service.
By the way, were you northbound om the M40 on monday 24th around J15 at about half seven? I saw a TWT lorry coming the opposite direction and thinking it might have been you, flashed and waved! (It dawned on me afterwards that you don’t know who I am!)
PS it’s CAPTAIN Caveman if you please, Cavey is an acceptable alternative though.

LOL, No Cavey that wasn’t me. My area is directly south of Andover and I spend most of my day in the general area of Romsey and Southampton. I do look out for other people’s name plates, but not great at it, as I’m generally concentrating on the road. I was in Soutampton’s Dock Gate 20 yesterday (the container port) and checking out peoples plates, as that’'s like a highway of non stop Artic’s.
I felt rather intimidated in my little rigid!
Add 7 years ago it was hopeless in reverse

Ah, the old “inadequate lorry syndrome”. Behave as if you’re using the toilets in a pub, look straight ahead, don’t stare if you do happen to glance over, don’t play with yours and certainly don’t try and strike up a conversation!
Ah the old “I have a bigger lorry than you” syndrome kicking in I see
