One for the CB radio users (if there are any)

Can’t understand why you’d want to talk to someone 100 miles away on the cb. We use cb when on narrow roads to save meeting head on. Let’s a driver get in a passing place and saves an often long reverse. Also when on main roads to warn/ask about Amy delays, hazards, roadworks or police.

Cb is also a handy safety feature to contact other drivers nearby. Not handy if you are getting drowned out by breaker breaker yapping to midnight rambler about white doggy doo in the seventies. C’mon. Rodger deeee.

I remember in the 80s with the illegal ones, (can’t remember AM or FM) in the area I live in the North, at night you could pick up the USA, …obviously you could not talk to them just hear them.
If that sounds like a lie to the ham experts, honestly it is not.
Alabama was mentioned quite regular afai recall.

This. Yes it’s annoying that modern cbs don’t get out 10 miles but (especially around here) you wouldn’t want it because of all the crap talking.

No that isn’t a lie, my record in a single weekend operating on 10m amateur band (the one just above the CB band and effectively works the same) is over 500 contacts in 92 countries on 5 continents in a total of 16hrs doing everywhere from Alaska down to the tip of Argentina and I’ve also talked to a guy in the Falklands whilst sat in my car outside a chippie in Driffield. But claiming you can talk to people further on FM because it makes the signal mysteriously do something that it doesn’t do in any other mode is.

Conor:

Pat Hasler:
Having used both, FM is better than AM, FM signals follow the Earths surface so provided there is nobody on your channel between you and who you want to talk to he can be 100 miles away and you can carry on a conversation.

Oh dear. Complete ■■■■■■■■. Please don’t try to get technical about something you clearly know nothing about.

What do you mean ? Look facts, FM follow the land lines and AM travels in straight lines so it is not Complete ■■■■■■■■, have you even used both ? have you done research or are you just a dozey idiot ? I have been using CB radios for 35 years and researched them quite a lot I know how they work, now if you actually have a comment that you know is true say it, otherwise shut the f**K up.

Haha. Was waiting for you to put your foot in it. You’ve been using CB radios for 35 years, so have I but unlike you I’ve got a full amateur radio license which unlike you I had to pass THREE exams to get and I have entire books on the subject. My antenna book alone is 992 pages long and over an inch thick.

Not only have I used both AM and FM I have also used CW, USB, LSB, PSK, JT65 and several other modes and I’ve not just done it on 27MHz like you but from 1.6MHz all the way up to 1.3GHz and my license allows me to work from 136kHz up to 250GHz which is just below the frequency of light.

FM and AM are merely different types of modulation all being radiated by the same kind of signal. They do not alter how the signal travels although the modulation type can affect the range to some extent as a narrower band modulation will achieve a further range per watt than a wide band type such as AM or FM due to power density - an example is a torch with a narrow beam will have the light reach further than one with a wide beam.

Radio signals travel by several methods. First is ground wave but that only goes up to around 3MHz so that eliminates your curvature of the earth following ■■■■■■■■. Second is skywave, “skip” as you probably know it, where your signal is reflected back off the ionosphere at various layers depending on time of day, time of year and sun activity. At this time of year the skip on 11m in the northern hemisphere is “Sporadic-E” where your signal hits a cloud of ionised gas in the E layer of the Ionosphere (hence its name) which usually results in contacts from around 100 to several hundred miles. Thirdly is line of sight which is applicable to CB frequencies and higher and how you’ll do most contacts. What determines how far you can get is things like buildings in the way or hills in the way and the Radio Horizon, i.e when the earth gets in the way. What determines the distance of the radio horizon is how high both the transmitting station and the receiving station are above sea level. Another method of propogation is tropospheric ducting which typically only works at VHF and higher frequencies. Then of course there is moonbounce, meteor scatter etc…

And before you consider replying I’ll post this. Its what I got in one of the largest worldwide contests. Note it says World division followed by 1st Place meaning I came first in the world in the category I entered. I have a wall full of first place in England in class certificates from 2010-13 for CQ-WW, CQ-WPX, ARRL International DX and IARU HF contests as well as having five DXCC certificates. You don’t ever want to argue with me about radio because I can make you look like a complete and utter clown and lose you in so many ways about so many things its not even funny.

I await your apology.

Boom

Well done Rookie!

Did you win a Blazer or an Anorak? :open_mouth:

Sandpaper for his claws at a guess

No name on it could be anybodies

So what does an amateur radio certificate/Jim’ll Fix it badge allow you to do, apart from discussing health complaints with someone 100 miles away?

Its got a callsign on it, M0GVZ, one which is issued by OFCOM when you apply for your license which you’ll find if you do some research belongs to me and can only belong to me. Its not transferrable, it doesn’t get re-issued.
