You have had a interesting life Harry I had two cousins who fought in Korea and my dad said they were different guys who came back they were heavy drinkers to the day they passed on what happened to them I don’t know I am not sure if they were with the Glorious Gloucesters

hiya,
As far as I was concerned there was no heroics from me it was just a case of keeping
the little yellow men on their own side of the border a case of us watching them
watching us, the major hostilities were all finished when I got there and I was one of
the many National Servicemen who did our two years service in both Korea and
Malaya, the latter being the dodgier job of the two at the time in question and I think
that soldiering and drinking go hand in hand but those Gloucester boys being infantry
had it rough a horrible war for those lads at that time in Korea, glad I missed that.

Thanks Harry you are a font of knowledge

Hiya,
I have often been described as a mine of information “most of it useless”
thanks harry, long retired.

Maybe useless to some ,of use to others

Harry is being modest, plumber, mechanic taxi driver and lorry driver to name just a few of his talents, as well as resident raconteur on TNUK.
Cheers Dave.

Hiya,
Yes Dave, certainly taxi driver, a little tale from about five or six weeks ago, I was
roped in to take the missus and two grandbairns to the local ten pin bowling alley
being promised I didn’t need to take part and could sit in the tele lounge watching
sport but being a nosey old sod I ambled over to the thing where the kids and the
missus were attempting to demolish a group of skittle things by rolling a big ball at
them and I noticed they weren’t having much success, and was seen to be laughing
was told to have a go if I could do better, well to be truthful I’d never ever been
inside a bowling alley in my life so the elder of the kids I bet you can’t even hit the
pins granddad, so I had a go and “bam” unknown to me I’d achieved a strike we bet
you can’t do that again granddad so I sent another ball down and did the same thing
again another ball and yet another strike three on the trot and never ever had a go
before I even got applause from the people playing on either side, the only problem
I had was getting upright again after letting the ball go, and to be honest I haven’t a
clue why people bother patronising the place at all, applause or not I won’t bother
going again I was bored to tears and pleased as punch when it was home time.

Strewth, he’s a ten pin bowler now, is there no end to this mans talents, as well as all the other things he excels at let’s not forget he’s a bit of a gigalo and a malt whisky connoisseur as well. :stuck_out_tongue:

Hiya,
Dave forgot to mention coalminer and short spell as a deep sea fisherman, the
latter I’d have gladly done fulltime had the permanent job come my way but
unfortunately I never got beyond second reserve awaiting someone getting
injured or falling off the perch, in those days, plus the difference in wages the
lorry driving would have only counted as another string to my bow, variety as
they say being the spice of life, as a young fellah life was for living and boy did
I live it.

One of my Uncles was a Bevin boy in WW2 Harry, and from what he’s told me it was quite frightening going down the mines, especially from a none mining area. I’ve watched a lot of programs on TV about the trawlers and deep sea fishermen, that looks a very dangerous job, also a very cold job,
Any one working in either of those jobs earn every penny they get. Give me a lorry every time, even the hand ball jobs.
Cheers Dave.

I remember years ago a programme about north sea fishermen from Hull and the cameras followed him on 2/3trips he owned the boat and he had a big house outside the town ,and his crew got paid a share of the catch ,I could not do that job for any amount of money ,what ever they got paid they more than deserved it ,then sadly the fishing restrictions came in and the whole industry disappeared over night ,destroyed places like Hull /Grimsby well done EU
