Older wagons still earning their corn

Not really wagons, but…

I remember quite a few of those Twin Fords in the 1960s. They were excellent over hilly and sticky ground. There was a little firm in Fownhope, near Hereford who specialised in building these monsters.
There’s something peculiar about the Standard Fordson doing the ploughing. It appears to be a diesel but I can’t recall ever seeing an oil-powered one. It looks as if some enterprising soul has fitted an electric start, as the aluminium front box is covering the site of the Fordson’s starting handle. It would be good to know a bit more…

Even though it’s very little to do with lorries!

Well spotted that man! It is fitted with an elderly 4 cylinder Perkins - a popular conversion, apparently, as an adapter kit was sold in large numbers, or so the owner told me. The FWD tractors are Doe Triple D models, made by Ernest Doe and Sons in Essex during the 1950’s/60’s.
A couple more pictures of big ones for your interest.

Steve

Thanks, Steve. I notice that the steering on these “modern” ones is by hydraulic ram, thus doing away with the 20 feet of brake pipe on the cheaper models!

They certainly did look the part. :sunglasses:

I bought this old Merc’ for £3.5k, it did 20 Romanian Aid trips, into Albania 1991, Croatia god knows how many times, I sold it for same as I bought it for. Always had problems but my toolbox kept it running. All for free to organisations that raised Aid, the trailers were donated, but I delivered them on continent when empty.

Hi Hopey,

Was it a V8 or a V10?

It was only a V8, but to me my home.

It was taxed as a car!!! (non hire & reward) the VOSPA agreed that it could be tacho exempt, in writing (except German/Austrian borders didnt like this idea!!! It had a night heater !! wow, warnth…everything I required as a former …ucker, I had many minor problems with it, diesel filters, exhaust parting, loss of brakes, (only a minor repair ) comfort compared to the trucks I was used to driving. It went well and served for the 3 years I did the Aid trips.
