anybody remember or have any pics of W.F Daniels from bromsgrove my old man used to drive for them they used to have the marathon and new scania 111 painted in red and white used to pull for corona

Didn’t they have a fleet of union jack ERF’s before they closed in the early 80’s. I seem to remember their yard being near Merry Hill. As for Lloyds of Ludlow, they sold up a year or two back. Their sliderflex steel trailers can be seen being pulled by Multiserv/Faber Prest motors.

Was it not suttons of st helens that had the fleet of union jack erf,s.

Suttons only had the flag on the front panel. Daniels were rather more “comrehensive” shall we say.

NEJ:
Yes “DieselDave” you are right it was Suttons of St. Helens who ran the ERF,s with the Union Jack on the front and for some unknown reason there are virtually no Suttons wagons in preservation (except an Atki 6wheel tractor unit) which I think has been converted to a recovery truck in Yorkshire somewhere.

There are a few ex-Sutton’s motors in preservation

Hold on, just slip on my anorak…

SDJ 415L The Chinese 6 Atkinson artic you mentioned - actually a Defender 8-legger that was cut down to a tractor, having earlier been a wrecker for Transfleet

JTB 885P Atki Borderer with 240 Gardner

LDJ 335 Mk. 1 Atki, that was inside at St Helens for many years with a generator on its back

WDJ 217M Atki Defender - I believe Sutton’s last 8-legger

Chinese 6 ERF LV tractor (UDJ 828H??) that went through Kevin Dennis’ auction in 1999, restored to full Sutton’s liveryy

UDJ 900 Mk.1 Atki, restored at GREAT expense by Seddon Atkinson c.1992, including a brand new cab built from scratch, but finished in Riding’s livery because Sutton were no longer Seddon Atkinson customers

Sutton’s introduced the Union Jack front panel for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, and then decided to keep it going for some time after that. Didn’t Daniel’s have the flag across the doors?

yes your right so did g l baker on all there c and e type erfs and saw a sed atki in turkey still with there name and flag on

Great info as usual gents ,thanks a lot

regards dave

SEABOURNE EXPRESS - still going but not in transport, now own dutyfree shops in Middle East and other varied businesses
R.H.TROTTMAN - another one which rings a bell?
MURPHYS - as in Northern Ireland, lots of Transcons on swinging meat work
MARTINTRUX - reputedly had problems when Ministry discovered that actually they DIDN’T have a load of Italian based drivers who took over the driving from Mt.Blanc
BOWLER INTERNATIONAL - Still at Basildon doing forwarding I think, there was a great bloke on for them doing Barca every week in mid 80s, Johnny Paterson - absolute scream to run with

LACEYS BARKING - Nicely turned out red & grey trucks, also ran coaches

WHITE TRUX - mr white now runs european (blue scanias) out of dover
MCKELLA - still see trailers around with name on, usually pulled by carr bros

hi
wasnt Trotmans out of Wooten Bassett WILTS i think they did a bit of subbie work with Nobblett & Underwood out of Northfleet Kent.
One of the drivers got hold of a REAL two tone train horn that was loud! better than my 36" Hadleys!

RH (Rex) Trotman were indeed based in Wilts - on a farm between Cricklade and Swindon, used to run a small tidy fleet of F88/F12s and i think they also had a Daf 2800,two tone blue. Not long before they finished ,they were running white FL 10s.
John Piff, one of the drivers that got an award for helping people out of Wallystop Aachen when it had that explosion
used to drive for them.

Hi TIMBO,
I worked with a guy on Dow Freight called Alan Morrey who lived in Crewe and a few of the fitters from the railway works used to drink in his local pub. Alan asked them what were the chances of getting a train air horn for his Foden and a couple of weeks later they brought one in and gave it to him for free.
Alan asked our fitters if they would put it on for him but they refused, they thought that with one blast his air tanks would empty so quickly, his brakes would lock on and poor old Alan would be ejected through the front screen of his Foden.

Re: B.J. MYERS

Timbo - not gone, you’ll be pleased to know!

Still very much in business, running from Kent and now plain white - new fleet of MAN TGX’s

K

Lowes of Paddokwood were taken over by Turners of Soham, and i think Cabmount were from the Pufleet/thurrock area of Essex Timbo.

Cabmont or Cables Montague used to run out of the Europa Trading estate in Erith among their other depots, I’ve seen something about them on the Southampton thread & they were also up in the north west somewhere, they did the Otis Elevator stuff from Erith & I think Kimberly Clark, mainly reels of paper & had a big shed full of it, they moved out when the paper caught fire & Barbers got the contract after that, until their warehouse caught fire too :open_mouth:

Hi
On my Scania i had a spare air tank, It already had small horns put on then we put 36" Hadleys on.
It might be possible that that Trottmans F10 had extra tanks on to compenstate the issue!.
My Dad an ex O/D always said dont put any extras on that will interfere with your brakes, as the conclusion would be a problem!
Regards Tim

Cabmont had a depot on Jackson St. St Helens then in the late 70s rented a workshop, office, & parking space off Heatons Transport, Merton bank St Helens. Contracts they had that I know of: Otis Elevator, Kirkby, Atlas Stone, Royston, Burmah Oil, Theale. I used to bring the tankers up to St Helens for MOTs when I was on the night flyer for Cabmont…nice easy night for me that was.
Other old transport companies gone: Fred Davies, St Helens & Evesham, mainly fruit out of L/pool & veg from Evesham. Heatons Trans mainly bottles out of Forsters (Rockware) Northwest Freighters, Haydock, fridge work (Kraft).
I hope Bubbleman as got some pics of these companies.

Hi Tim, I presume that you received my P.M. that I sent you on the 8th February  .
I alway’s thought that your Dad was a wise man, so can you ask him if he remember’s the Whoopy Horn’s that the grease monkey’s at The Mocamp garage used to fit. They did this by cutting into the air brake pipe, inserting a Tee piece and securing it three jubilee clip’s :unamused: , all the Turkish trucks were fitted with them. When you used a switch in the cab it produced a very loud screeching noise but not as loud as the vehicle inspectors made when you took the truck for an M.O.T. .
I am still hoping that you can find an old photo of your Dad and his truck.
Regards Steve.

Tammy,
Fairfrieght was bought out by debeaux which intern has been taken over…cant think of who by at the moment. i used to work for Simon Sargent at the time. along with dave “bara” baraclough, bob thurgood who left to go to cavewood when they where just south of narborough leic. bara has now retired and does some occasional agency work for dairy crest at nuneaton. dave had a lot of running pals, one being Flipper who got his name after putting a truck in a river on the continent, many more might now dave as he drove the red roadtrain that simon had then complained like hell when he got a new scania…

I knew Dave Baraclough well, I first met him when I was a trailer boy on Banbury Building, he was driving for Richardsons of Coventry, had a Big J, then worked with him at Wilkinsons, after I left there I would see him in Dover alot as I was on Richard Fords then. say hello to the old bugger for me.
