There seem to be threads for every part of the country except the north east, so howzabout setting one off. Theres plenty to go at and a few have been mentioned elsewhere such as Cawthornes, VanHee,Clarks, but what about Murray Hoggs, Jakey Adams, Fergusons of Blyth, Bells of Ashington, T T Walkers, Elddis, and what about a mention for Norman’s cafe at Brotherton a favourite watering hole for scores of North East lads.
HellooooI have just joined trucknetuk pal it has opened up an old trampers world since i bought this pc 2 months ago getting more attention than a fuller box .The first NORTHEAST Firm i remember was JJ BROWNLEE we loaded him for Spillers ,an eight wheeler ATKI I worked for MYATTS BARNSLEY did a lot of runs to North East. Does anyone have any information, pictures if possible of lorries/ companies etc, that were contracted to the old Lime Sand & Mortar quarries in Greenside near Ryton in the sixties ?
There were a lot of owner drivers and local companies working out of Burnhills quarry and I,d dearly love to hear of any stories pics etc that anyone may have.
I knew a few owner drivers, and some of the companys I remember were Henry Trobes, Coxons from the west end of Newcastle, Cranstons ( Dunston ) still see Ken !. In later years (Burslam) who had a garage at the top of Whickham bank operated a few lorries.
Also Walker bros had two J Type swb tippers in the LSM colours of red and cream, I remember one of the drivers was called Ralphy he lived in Greenside, can,t remember his second name ?
Any info would be great

Great info, I will call in & have a bit crack with him, he might even have some old photos of his old motors, Regards Larry. PS. I remember one of his drivers I think his name was Jackie he nearley got electrocuted when he was tipping a load of drainage gravel & the alloy body touched some overhead cables.

…, nice one…,with regards to the picture you posted re the eight wheel AEC,s, these were the red and cream I was on about, but these eight wheelers I think? were for hauling raw limestone to the quarry in the evening time, they were,nt used for hauling to building sites etc, normal stuff was just four wheelers and usually swb models as they were much easier to manouvre on rough building sites. I remember seeing those AEC,s around that time each night when I lived in Greenside. The limestone load could be seen giving off some smoke as it was still a raw product.
They would tip their load down the old mortar plant, ready for the next day to be processed.
Before Smiles had these AEC,s they used eight wheel Fodens, the old timber cabbed one,s and painted in the distinctive red and green livery with ( Smiles for Miles) on the cab headboard. Those old Fodens used to make a lovely noise fully loaded and on chat .
Then when Braithwaites took over and changed the livery to red and cream, contracted lorries had to follow suit hence the AEC,s in your pic being that colour.
You can just make out the name Braithwaite on one of the lorries…, all great memories, it,s good to share !
Regards
Ken
The Foden tippers you mention were 1942 S 18s, Some of their regs were FOX■■?, the came from Birmingham Area, the lime sometimes came from Buxton, & in later years from BP. At Marfleet Hull, Also there was a owner driver did it up to Burnhills from BOC at Birtley I cant remember his name though, but he was a local outfit, Regards Larry.
