THE GREEN PIMPERNEL:
Red viking in his prime !

  • A blast from the past, the Red Viking stopped to pick me up the day I ran out of petrol at Melkridge just after passing my driving test (Nov 1982). He dropped me at my work place - Elliott’s of Haltwhistle so I could get the breakdown out and bring the car back  , used to speak to red viking on cb regular after that, but haven’t been on air for few years now…is he still around?

Hi transporter man,
John Walton died a tragic death trapped under the the wagon when the jack slipped in the garage at Castleside,if you
remember his brother Bill lost a leg while driving for J R Young shortly before N B Transport had three written off on the
A74 on the Motherwell job,2 ERFs and a Leyland ,Kenny was killed.

son of a witchdoctor:
My dads old truck. not that i remember it in particular but he used to love driving when he was younger, he always wanted to be a truck driver.

8LXBV8BRIAN:
P&G City road The Merc is a 1619 nicknamed the sewing machine which was on the day and night trunk
to trafford park with the truck from HELL STY 38S THE DEVIL himself made that truck not
SEDDON/ATKINSON.
Poor Billy geoheghan got the 1619 for general work as it was taken off the trunk as it was not up to it
and was replaced by the First V8 Mercedes 558S carnt remember the first three letters.

Yes i remember Billy, remember one very hot summers day working in the bottom yard shifting Manchester liner box’s around
using the mobile crane your dad was on top of the boxes slinging the chains, tea time came around in the afternoon,
so i’m in the crane billy up top on a box so i get out to get the ladder so your dad could climb down.  :bulb:
Billy nah nah lift me down on the chains, me just climb down the ladder so it went onfor a bit.
in the end tea was getting cold  ok billy put yah foot in the chains and hold on lifts him up swings the jib round switches the engine off gets out and walks away your dad was left hanging in the air next to the railway line.
sits down at the bate table with me tea, the rest of the lads say billy not coming in for a cuppa, i should be must be hanging about outside     :astonished: :open_mouth: and in the distance your dad was shouting to be let down.
Ian Forrest sent me out to let him down after we all stood at the garage doors laughing your dad took it all in good fun he was one of a great bunch of drivers at the time at waughs.

Morning Lawrence you can add Robert Tait to the quaysiders he did pallets and haulage if my memory is correct his shed was along the spillers end of things. I remember Transport services had an old blue Guy unit and AEC unit left to rot outside shed 8 for yrs and an old colum change M.A.N unit which lay dead in the shed

Hi lawrence just been imformed that it wasnt an AEC outside shed 8 it was a 2 pedaled Leyland badger which used to belong to charles alexander and was involved in an accident before transport services bought it

Davie

Well they all look a bit like each other with the Ergo Cab.

Hi marcus the picture of young john bell bet he had some ks over the pond even at that age cheers bob.

Lawrence Dunbar:
Another one NB. Transport Shotley Bridge still going as far as I know, Plus R.Page Blackhill, had a green DAF., & Dews from Burnhopefield green Bedfords in the earley 60s then changed to blue I remember Eric Dews having a 8wheeler TK,on a coke job.

Did the Green DAF not belong to Arthur Page. I can only rember 3 Page’s at Blackhill Joe, John and Arthur. IIRC Arthur’s wagons were always green and Joe and John’s were different blue’s.

The last time I saw Eric Dews was late nineties and he was recovering from a heart attack. The last waggon he had was blue Hino 8 wheeler.

The chances are if it was Charles Alexander and had 2 pedals it would It would be a Leyland Beaver, the Badger was the lightweight unit with an AEC box plated at 26ton.

A few more, David ? Lowe, Snows Green, Shotley Bridge.
Alan Butterfield, Castleside.
John Walton, Castleside

transporter man:
A few more names don’t know if they have been mentioned before:
Mark Ainsley Tantobie not far from Hunters, he used to have coalboard contracts and sub a lot of work out, I think they were green trucks.
Armstrongs Shotley Bridge they were green Leyland Comet 90’s.
Denis Moody Shotley Bridge last truck new Scammell Routeman tipper.

Hi Paw
It was Davey Lowes he worked at Glendinnings before he was 21, got a new Reiver tipper died in his mid 20s with kidney problems. John Walton was the one who did regular oil changes wasn’t he!!
Also:
Robert Whinney Sherburn Tce Consett
Maycock Brothes Lanchester Mick & Bobby
H V Maycock Lanchester Harry

Another one to add from Lanchester was the Black Bull Garage they ran Dodge 4 & 6 wheeler tippers owner Josh Tomlinson who was a regular at the RHA meetings. Harry Dent was the fitter.

Aye BlackBull Garge, they had the coke job at Norwood, Smiles used to run it down to Melton Mowbray in the 60s. for them. with their 8wheeler Atkis, with greedy boards on so they got their weight on. Happy days.Eh. La.

Larry, I think you might have to explain “greedy boards” to our younger contributors, especially if they are not tipper drivers.  regards kevmac47.

Hello truckers boy, you will have a few of us old gits wondering who your dad is come on own up!!! Last I heard of Ritchie Wright he was still running one vehicle but that was about a year ago. I know he is a year or two older than me so he may have retired now. Hope that helps regards kevmac47. PS. 80 weeks to go!!!

My dad is Ian Warwick (spot the last name  )
My granda is James richard Lambton - was known as Dicky lambton also worked for gallagher’s, applegarths, trailerco, gurteens & a hell of alot more.

Hi Guy’s, I just came upon this and its what I was looking for all along- I do remember your Granda Dicky Lambton as he was one of the first drivers I spoke to on my first day as an apprentice fitter sept 1985 and his was the first vehicle I helped service It was a Volvo F10 TFT499Y one of four we had along with two Daf 3300 and a couple of F7 tractor units X115/116JRG. I believe the F10 went to Reeve trspt but I saw your Granda a few years later and he remembered me but by then I was workshop foreman. I wonder if he remembers those two apprentices starting out on their careers way back in 1985. I have a picture of one of the F10s TFT497Y but thats about it which is why I was looking for this site in the first place. I believe I was the longest serving fitter at Gurteens so will be able to remember most of the fleet reg/drivers too. Hope this helps KG3

hi kg3 that is great info especialy as my dad & granda also drove for reeves my dad was also transport manager there. im sorry though it would take a miracle that i wish every day for him to remember yous as he passed away 2yrs next month. would you have any pictures of his truck or even better him?

There were some great hauliers around the Newcastle area, I can go back to the 50s, the Quayside was heaving in those days both sides of the river, ships galore plenty of graft for everyone . where did it all go== containerisation thats where most of it went. I concidered those days to be good, despite what some might say. Firms like Baxters J.R.Adams.McPhees,Capstaff, Crows, O&B, J.J.Brownlee.Smiles for Miles,F.S.Short & Sons.Jacky Snee,Philips of Gateshead, Peackocks of Eighton Banks, J.R.Henderson.& lots more. I remember attending the RHA meetings, where all sorts of topics were talked about, sorry to say no meetings anymore, It was good crack when Ronny Henderson got so his bit, plus Bob Peackock who was as straight as a dye, Jack Sharkey,Arthur Lowdon & myself of course plus many more. The great good old days, Regards Larry

Larry there are just a couple of those companies about now in some ways sad to say

The demise of the shipyards didnt help but as with everything times change but not always for the better
