Ray, I bought my first tractor unit from Pilkingtons when I started as an O/D. The late Tony P.
was a good friend of mine , and that unit served me very well. Apart from regular maintenance I never spent a penny on it. Regards Kev.0

Pilkingtons had a removal van and I (forgot his Christian name) met him many times at British Association of Removers meetings dinners etc often. Really nice bloke. About my dad’s age and generation. Don’t think it was Tony Was he his son?

Sorry Carl, I can’t remember the first name of the senior Mr Pilkington, but his two sons were Tony and John. Regards Kev.

Allan was a really nice bloke, never met either of his sons. You say Tony sadly died He must have been relatively young.

Take care

Yes Carl, Tony was a relatively young man when he passed on after a very short illness.
His two sons Andrew and James were selling camper van and RVs the last time I was in contact with them. A really nice family. Regards Kev.

The only time anyone seemed to take pictures of anyone backing a lorry in those days seem to hail from Lorry Driver of the Year trials.

My father drove for R&N in the late 60s when they were in Byker, he wasn’t driving this one in this photo thankfully. They were all ridges, he drove their first artic,an AEC mandator. The second photo is of an R&N in Hollands Livery after they were taken over.

. Yes I do, They also ran a 4 wheeler Seddon which they sold to Crows of Gateshead, Regards Larry.

Kelmans of Turriff and Crows of Gateshead were part of the Storefreight Group based in Dunston Gateshead.
Jimmy Kelmans brother was the manager there.
I’m not sure where this Cawthorn and Sinclair location was.
A nice old photo of M Cooks AEC Mercury.
An old one of Murray Hoggs Mercedes.

My Brothers and me got dragged to Parrish’s many times by our Mother, like many others I suspect, to find new school shoes and socks etc for the new school year to start. J T Parrish like some other large stores had their own coin or token system using what was really crude plastic coins, these I’m sure will also be remembered. What we did like though was the journey on the Trolley Bus, as shown in the photo, from our estate to either Shields Road, where there was, as well as the Parrish store, many other shops and cinemas but also to Newcastle centre or the Toon as it was and still is known. A couple of those tokens below. Franky.

Two old North East companies sadly no longer in existence.
