Back to Eagle Transport, I remember being in London one day when Skipper Bisset came onto the hill, he had come through the B/W,Tunnel & his windscreen popped, ,He allways cabed it summer or winter, he was pretty tall so he would be a bit cramped in the LAD type cab, so he booked a bed at Tonys in Mansell Street, just up from the hill, Albert Greenwood & lots more Newcastle drivers took the p all night, they even laughed & told him he would get bed sores, But he he took it in good fun, Im hoping he is still about, because he might have photos which I hope he has , but get him on here & he will have us going for sure, great lad was Charlie Skipper Bisset, he had a boat at Ryton, hence the nickname Skipper, Regards Larry
Lawrence, Skipper Bisset was my much older cousin. His real name was John Bisset but for some reason called himself Charlie Bisset. My farther was Charlie Bisset from Ryton & ran tippers from 1930s - 1970s. He told me that John (Skipper) had been a bit of a lad in his time & got into allsorts of trouble. Saddly John passed away about 8 years ago . Also my dad was a great drinking pal with Albert Greenwood & ■■■■ Pulkinhorn at the Jolly Fellows Ryton .Cheers Roy.
I worked with Charlei Bissitt at Pw Bristol; he was on the trans continental what a bloke great guy had some storys i mated him on and off he was a great family feind of ours up till he passed and yes one very very tuff guy miss him still RIP Chas
Just an an example of what Charlie used to get up to, I remember many years ago of an escapade to Nigg Bay where Charlie was involved. It must have been in the 1970s when the North Sea oil was just getting started. One of the shipping agents in Newcastle was expecting 3 dump trucks to arrive from the other side of the North Sea to go to the site at Nigg to help with the site clearance and construction. I think the trucks landed in Sunderland but my memory could be wrong. The agent was looking for 3 drivers to drive the trucks up to Nigg as a cash-in-■■■■■■■■ and was pointed in the direction of Charlie. I can’t remember who else Charlie roped in but he put the team together and they went off to Sunderland in Charlie’s car. At that time he had a Volvo P1800 (like The Saint used to drive in the TV series) so it must have been a bit tight for the third man in the back. The trucks were craned off the ship then Charlie persuaded the crane driver to lift the car into the back of one of the trucks. I don’t think it would be sheeted but they might have put a rope over it! Off they went to Nigg (which must have been quite a trip in those days before all the improvements to the A9) where Charlie persuaded another crane driver to lift the car off and back home they all came.
Happy days.
A good lot of photo’s again Tyneside, the shot of the Ouseburn motors especially, looking from Lime St to the Ship pub. The Volvo was new to Alan Patrick and an F Reg, the Seddon could be my Fathers J Reg, although they had about four with 220 Rolls at the time, he was on local with it so quite possibly popped into the Ship for ‘dinner’! The Warehouse and Workshop were just to the left on Stepney Bank. Cheers Franky.
